This week’s poll is from Malhirviel who gives us a question regarding the housing revamp that Turbine has a focus on in 2013. It’s a pretty big poll but I think all of Malhirviel’s responses were good ones. If you had to pick just one as what you would like to see most, what would it be? Feel free to expand upon your choice in the comments below.
What change would you most like to see as part of the upcoming housing revamp?
- A change to/elimination of the "hook" system, allowing more flexibility in the placement and orientation of housing items (33%, 370 Votes)
- Have housing provide more in-game benefits - more vault space, crafting/questing buffs, etc. (18%, 202 Votes)
- Have housing details reflect your toon - your horses standing in the stable, your cosmetics hanging in the closet, etc. (12%, 131 Votes)
- A fix for "dead neighborhoods" (8%, 96 Votes)
- Greater interior/exterior customization options - ability to design your own floor plan, paint individual walls, shingle/thatch your roof, etc. (7%, 77 Votes)
- Eliminate the need for houses to be in set neighborhoods at all, and allow players to build houses anywhere that's settled (i.e. - not in the slime pools of Angmar, but anywhere sufficiently tamed by (7%, 75 Votes)
- Expanding the locations with housing neighborhoods (e.g. - Enedwaith, Forochel, Great River, etc.) (6%, 70 Votes)
- Other (Leave a comment) (4%, 46 Votes)
- More types of houses (bungalows, mud huts, mansions, caves, etc.) (3%, 37 Votes)
- Make it easier to travel to/from/around housing neighborhoods (2%, 24 Votes)
- A greater variety of items to put into the houses (more yard items, paintings, dead animals, etc.) (0%, 13 Votes)

All of the above
February 9, 2013 at 11:17 am
Yes, all of the above.
February 9, 2013 at 1:28 pm
+1
February 9, 2013 at 1:41 pm
All of the Above. AND PETS!
February 9, 2013 at 3:02 pm
Agreed! I chose the “Hook” option, but the others are equally good. I wouldn’t mind a system allowing me to build anywhere, but I think that’s out of Turbine’s….grasp. However easier traveling, personalization, and more in-game benefits would all be excellent to see.
February 10, 2013 at 4:31 am
agreed. all options need he addressed
February 11, 2013 at 12:57 am
Agreed. Turbine’s done almost nothing for the housing system. And new trophies are only droping from T2 raids. In moria, even 6-mans would drop decorations
February 10, 2013 at 3:09 am
^^ AGREE. All of the above. Give us more freedom.
February 9, 2013 at 8:29 am
My biggest disapointment with the Lotro housing system is a fairly simple one, there isn’t enough stuff. Rohan has alleviated this somewhat but just giving me a greater variety of styles and colors and patterns would go along way towards making me happy. You could even tie it into reviving old instances and areas by making some furniture drop only and making others crafting exclusive(To give some love to the hardcore crafters).
February 9, 2013 at 3:44 pm
I’d have to disagree with you about lack of items. There is too much stuff. We have 3 deluxe houses and 2 kin houses filled with unique items and still have many more that I’d like to put up.
I would like to see more crafting exclusive items and instance items, however there will need to be a size update first to fit all the stuff.
February 9, 2013 at 8:36 am
yes, all of the above.
February 9, 2013 at 8:43 am
My only real ‘wish’ is that this Housing revamp does not have a negative impact on development of the rest of the game.
Specific to the poll though, clearing the neighbourhoods and making the hooks less restrictive would seem the most beneficial. The rest are more wishful thinking, and we certainly won’t get all of them.
February 9, 2013 at 8:55 am
I don’t care about housing any attempt to improve it is just a waist of time.
February 9, 2013 at 9:02 am
All of the above, though “Have housing details reflect your toon” especially caught my eye.
But most of all – more places to put stuff at. I have loads of maps/paintings which I just can’t fit anywhere already.
February 9, 2013 at 9:10 am
I too would like to go with “all of above”.
But from the stuff, – its more/free hooks to place stuff in the house (I have enough stuff for 4-5 houses, and only one house where to put it), easier transportation (teleport to house is fine, but the travel back is lacking, and sure need improvement), and of course finally a solution to dead neigbourhoods/no awailable housing problem.
In reply to the concern of developing housing having impact on other parts of game – rest assured, its the housing that will get extra time thet can be spared from other stuff, if at least i read Scarycrow and others devs correctly in their intervievs…
February 9, 2013 at 9:19 am
Hmm I didn’t see it in the poll (unless it’s covered under something else) but I’d love to be able to “add on” to my house with additional rooms. I have a Deluxe, but I can’t get a kin house on my own and I wish all of my alts could have their own rooms. (Or allow us to buy more than one house :3) So for example you could pay 1 gold to add-on another bedroom or something.
And yes, the dead neighborhoods are sad!
February 9, 2013 at 9:23 am
Yeah I’m pretty sure most of us want ALL of it. The question is what do you want most.
February 9, 2013 at 9:44 am
I think my biggest wish is for it to not be heavily monetised.. though I’m quite sure this is exactly what will happen.
February 10, 2013 at 12:12 pm
THIS! After the yule fest I totally expect them to make us pay for additional “hooks” (hoping they get rid of actual ones) and so on, in TP. A lot of TP.
February 9, 2013 at 10:00 am
I just went with the hook system being abolished as that seems the most realistic and easy to do. All the suggestions are top notch but would require a complete code rewrite and I dont think they are going to do that yet, but rather tweak the existing code in the next update. prob add in alot of store items and perhaps new upgrades to your house.
February 9, 2013 at 10:02 am
At least a hook removal. Was already far too many items for use in one kinhouse sized house let alone a smaller one and RoR must have almost doubled the amount.
Ideally all of the listed options.
February 9, 2013 at 10:09 am
I want it all
February 9, 2013 at 10:33 am
I also want to be able to have more than one house, primarily because I want one of each style. Some items just don’t look right in my elf house. Extra houses would also let me decorate more rooms, and it would give me more storage chests, so win-win!
In order from most important to least important:
1. Allow at least one house per character instead of one per account; unlimited houses would be even cooler. Turbine could sell extra houses in the store.
2. No hooks or more hooks. I’m guessing Turbine will go with more hooks since this is easier, they can sell extra hooks in the store, and it prevents the junkyard look.
3. Better travel to and from my houses. Eliminate or shorten the house travel cooldown, and add stables to all neighborhoods.
4. More customization options. More wall and floor options especially. Any exterior options at all would also be great since we currently have none.
5. Additional neighborhood locations. Having additional regional housing styles would be awesome. Ice house in Forochel, tree house in Lothlorien, dwarf style in Moria, Dunland hut, and of course a Rohirrim style house would all be great. These could be tied to the reputation system, or be rare dungeon drops, or be sold in the store. Come on Turbine, think outside the box!
February 9, 2013 at 10:37 am
I would vote for more than one option, but I chose the one that consists of the first thing I think they should make happen – more housing options. For example, why must a Rohirrim man settle for a house in bloody Bree?!? Or a dwarf from the Lonely Mountain live in the Blue Mountains?
February 9, 2013 at 10:41 am
I voted the hook system, but on a selfish note, I’d love the size of the Hobbit rooms to be addressed. The deluxe home is simply too big for a Hobbit. Smials are supposed to be cozy, and that gigantic hall simply isn’t. I need it to be a much smaller space.
February 9, 2013 at 11:22 am
All of the options would be more than nice, but I chose “other” because I’d really like that it was possible that each of my toon have a house. I don’t feel right that my hobbit and my man characters have to live in Falathorn.
February 9, 2013 at 11:32 am
Dead neighborhoods. My house seems to be the only one that isn’t locked in my neighborhood, and same for our guild.
February 9, 2013 at 11:34 am
I would love to be able to improve on my house, but I would also like it to take some time to get the “best house on the block”. I would like it to be restrictive enough that a new player can’t just jump in to a fancy-pants house. We don’t want a housing bubble, do we?
February 9, 2013 at 11:47 am
I’m adding my voice to ‘all of the above’.
February 9, 2013 at 11:48 am
Same as many, really hard to pick just one.
February 9, 2013 at 12:30 pm
I selected the first option (hooks) as that is what I’d like to see the most… but I’d like to see a lot more done.
The question is how much we players would be willing to pay in TP in order for Turbine to make a profit on the time and expense they invested to make housing changes.
Personally I can see spending 2000 to 6000 TP to make changes to my personal kin house and personal house but I know most players in my kin would spend ZERO as the house is just an extra storage site for them.
I hope it turns out to be profitable for Turbine as that will give them justification to do more work in the future.
February 9, 2013 at 12:41 pm
Crafting, and spreadest Vaults. And I have to swift between 6 neighbours because sharing mats with friends. It is usefull but cost time and energy. Vaults on the farest houses from center.. (i know it’s not neither a minut of time diference) but is more a job than a game in that moment:D This comes from a deficit of houses with good (or not bad) location.. Where’s the Man’s property speculation when i need it?
good job with CSTM.
Thanks strollers.
February 9, 2013 at 12:42 pm
ALL!
February 9, 2013 at 1:02 pm
If I want my house to star on an episode of Hoarders, I should be able to decorate it as such!
February 9, 2013 at 2:23 pm
House for char not account
February 11, 2013 at 11:00 am
Oh, this is a marvelous idea! Though personally I’d still like the house to operate account-wide, I’d love for each character to be able to purchase a house…
February 9, 2013 at 4:43 pm
I wish that the housing areas were more integrated in to towns. So, for instance, it felt like you were living in bree rather than up near the lone lands. Accessed via a portal in the main towns.

February 9, 2013 at 5:12 pm
i really would like to see more stacking options with decorations, there is no reason why rugs, furniture, paintings cant stack. I remember realizing that fish trophies couldnt stack and stopped bothering with the fish quest cuz of that. Same with textures, paints and so on. Its clunky and goes far beyond impacting available storage. ideally they will put in a ‘wallet’ category for housing items alone. Rohan introduced almost 100 new items, on top of all the bound quest related and instance drops.
they have to do something. tho i dread another cash wallet
February 9, 2013 at 5:16 pm
Other – All of the Above!
February 9, 2013 at 5:21 pm
I voted other….I want all of the above
February 9, 2013 at 6:01 pm
All of the above – if they ever could do a “Sim” version of housing we would be the best game ever.
February 9, 2013 at 6:09 pm
ALL OF THEM..and also … biiger gardens at the back of houses ^^
February 9, 2013 at 7:44 pm
More hooks!
February 9, 2013 at 10:41 pm
How about intergrating housing more fully into the game by allowing players to acquire upgrades to their abode (add ons to the house, a stable on the grounds, etc) via quests and specially tailored instances that only apply to your neighborhood. It gives players another reason to login and afford them the opportunity to custom tailor their house to reflect their personal style.
February 9, 2013 at 11:00 pm
Like to see the common area (Vendors, stage etc) In the world at large with only the neighborhoods instanced. This might make it more likely you’d actually see other players in the housing area no matter which neighborhood they lived in.
February 9, 2013 at 11:14 pm
Of course I voted other. All of the choices are excellent ones but I see the possibility of a combination for the most reasonable ones. Ones that can be implemented within the mechanics of the game ie:
Revamp the hook feature, more ingame options, ie storage, more neighboorhoods in other regions, more personal items ie our mounts or at least the one you are using the most at the time in a stall on your property, Personal wardrobe for cosmetic outfits,
These seem feasible and possible within the scope of the game mechanics.
Just my own thoughts.
February 10, 2013 at 1:44 am
vote 1. All of the Above.
vote 2. More Housing locations… I would LOVE to have a house in Rivendell!
Vote 3. NO MORE HOOKS! I hate having a lot of nice items I want to put up but no where to put it. I even own a deluxe house and the only deluxe thing about it seems to be the fact you get a second chest and maybe a larger yard. -_-
February 10, 2013 at 1:46 pm
Other. The problem with the system is not that there isn’t enough stuff or styles or choices. The problem is that Housing is not a central activity place for anything. If the houses were to disappear tomorrow, would anything in LOTRO be different? Something needs to be done to make housing a central place for some sort of activity.
Maybe make it so that skirmishes / instances depart from the kin house. Or give a buff for having them depart from the kin house. The buff would be very minor, but enough to make it worth doing.
Or how about institute a new sort of cosmetic crafting system that would allow people in the kin house quick access to wearing it.
February 10, 2013 at 3:30 pm
All of the above!
Making the Housing System much more flexible and exciting would bring in a broader range of new players to LOTRO. Other MMOs are now realizing that (examples: Age of Conan, DC Universe’s new Lair System and Star Trek On-line’s new Starbase System) which allows Players to personalize their on-line experience. Remember the quote “If you build it, They shall come.” is true to almost any type of business, which could also be LOTRO if the Players are given that chance to be creative and express themselves. Who wouldn’t want the posibility to be able to build their own Custom Hobbit House or Gondorian Keep almost anywhere on the Map? A big question is if Turbine is willing to look at the LOTRO Store as a choice of Players being able to buy a Custom House or even a Castle as additional income? The only thing I really know is that the Housing System has to be fixed.
February 10, 2013 at 5:40 pm
All the options and more.
February 10, 2013 at 8:12 pm
All of the above, although I voted for #1. I’d like to clarify that though – it’s only #1 if it is an ELIMINATION of the hook system. Modification of the hook system is unsatisfactory and would put it bottom of my list, but elimination of it (moving to freeform) is so much more important to me than any of the others. Hook systems are unnecessary and outdated. If Turbine cannot move to a freeform system they need to hire better developers.

Weapons and Armor Display Racks!!!
I personally really enjoy the idea of the housing system. The one thing that I care about the most (and some would argue that its trivial) is weapon and armor display options.
Since 2007 I have collected and amassed a large quantity of special weapons and armor sets that currently sit in my vault. If I could somehow display these weapons and armor in my house that would really make my hoarding worthwhile. I know that there are a large number of people in game that do the same thing and after 5 years it leads to a cluttered vault. Honestly though I can’t part with some of the items.
For example, at level 50 I acquired the coveted “Captain’s Arm” weapon and still think its fantastic. Turbine, is there any way that I could in the future display this weapon and many others on a weapons rack or on a display plaque inside my house? Also, I don’t think that this addition would be too difficult. It would really speak volumes to how much Turbine developers care about the little things if they created weapon, armor, and item display options inside the housing system.
February 10, 2013 at 11:53 pm
I chose other, first and foremost remove the rent! We have nothing that justifies paying it. After that, these are all great ideas! More benefits would probably be my next choice.
February 11, 2013 at 7:23 am
While most of the above would be nice, I went with ‘Other’, as personally, I’d rather they fix the Kinship system first. A means to allow alliances and alliance chat, a group calendar and events system, something that rewards and helps to bring people together for various group content, either within a single kin or across multiple ones.
I think that would help LOTRO much more than a revamp to personal housing. Then once the kinship system is sorted, you could sideways expand on it with personal and kinship housing revamp.
February 11, 2013 at 8:21 am
Other. I honestly dont really care housing isnt something that really matters to me in this game. /gasp! Yes I know I said it.
February 11, 2013 at 8:22 am
I wish for a wardrobe-equivalent for housing items, to store a decent collection without sacrificing vault space.
And I would like more in-game incentives to spend time in your neighborhood. Some may worry about what does a house offer them during gameplay (storage, an extra teleport, etc…) but I am more concerned about getting people to hang around the neighborhoods, having group activities, and generally making the streets a little more alive.
February 11, 2013 at 10:56 am
We can have all the items in the world, but if I can’t put them where I want them, there’s really no point. So I voted to eliminate the hook system. That’s the big problem (MY big problem) with the new Rohan housing items–they have to sit in these silly, awkward spots that make no sense.
February 11, 2013 at 11:48 am
I would like to have one house per alt, rather than only having one shared house.
February 11, 2013 at 12:17 pm
I want to be able to put outside stuff inside and vice versa. How fun it would be to prank someone by filling their house inside and out with banners…
