One on my captain is kinda both funny and lore appropriate (sort of). It is called “Beofsward” trying to find an Old English-style name for my buff sword. No idea if it is accurate, but it amuses me nonetheless. :)

    • Siqua of Landroval Says:

I think “Beofsward” means “Oxskin” or “Beef’s Wall”. Sward is certainly Old English, but it means skin. Boef is French for ox. The ‘eo’ digraph has multiple pronunciations in English, but I think “beof” would be pronounced as “bee-oh-ef” which kind of gets us back to beef.

IIRC translating “Buff Sword” into Old English would give you “Scinan Sweord”; literally “Shining Sword” which is also nicely alliterative.

Of course, Beef’s Wall may be more memorable…

I usually try and find lore appropriate names for most items when I craft something. But I actually prefer the funny names, especially when someone makes something for me. My burg’s tools (made by a friend) were Mosby’s Man-purse. As a scholar, I craft a lot of books, and that usually gives me plenty of chances for funny names — like Fifty Shades of Green (a good hunter book name I thought).

  3. Merrydew Says:

I usually use just their corresponding number on 3rd agers, makes it simple but I will pick a theme for 2nd and 1st agers and that theme changes with my mood.

One Warden had ‘Spindle’ and ‘Needle’ on her Spear and Javelin for a while (she was a tailor).

At the moment, Merrydew is carrying a dagger named ‘Shiny Pokey Thing’ but it was named for me by the guy who made it.

Otherwise, if I am going to name an LI I do try to be lore appropriate with a sense of humor for Hobbits, dignified for Elves and blood-thirsty or brave for Dwarves. I don’t have any race of Man characters.

My legendaries get either old norse or old english names. Crafted weapons tend to get funny names unless it is intended for someone else then it is a lore appropriate but common name.

taking a cue from “the foe hammer” and “goblin biter”… i always pick names like that and then translate them into elvish using an online translator. I believe my current Staff for my elven loremaster is simply “orc foe”, but sometimes i’ll go with something goofy like “lightning rod” or “boom (explosion) stick”

This is the translator i use if anyone is curious: http://www.angelfire.com/empire2/angora5/Translator.html

I give them names that sound appropriate, like “slayer of spiders” and the like, but I translate them into Tagalog. That’s how I name my creeps too. My spider is Gagamba which is Tagalog for spider.

I tend to name stuff appropriate for the item, if for an alt Ill call it the alts name so i dont mess up and vendor it.

for AH i just put in a generic name and cut and paste that into each crafted item i make. i dont put much thought into it and am more annoyed I have to name the crafted item each time I crit… which is all the time. pffft

for keeper legendaries i tend to give it a meaningful/beautiful name that I can respect as befitting my best weapons. though I still have a belt called Snuggles from when i was feeling whimsical. thank god i finally deconstructed my sword called Puddin. heh heh

I call them descriptive names. Like “sharp dagger” if it’s very DPS focused, or “heavy bleeder” if it’s more DOT focused. But being a hobbit burglar that’s quite easy to do and feel right. I’ll see what I do when alts reach lvl50.

At first, I used names from a fantasy series called The Night Angel Trilogy. Then, I started trying to parse names from the Dwarven languages. Now, I just call everything “TaterGear” (everything crafted). My LM’s last name, btw, is “Taterlord”, and all my alts are “Taterlings”.

I still use the titles from Night Angel on my LM: Iures is the Staff of Law, and Curoch is the Sword of Power (though it is the name of my book).

My minstrel names her LIs after songs or albums I especially like (Songs You Know By Heart, Life’s Rich Pageant) or something funny (Heal Me Maybe). All of my captain LIs are named after famous ships (Constellation, Intrepid, Illustrious, Hornet). For my RK, I use the plays on words Ava’s Devine Fury and Tera Broke My Heart (his pet rock is SaraStone), whose names are inspired by “actresses”.

Sometimes, if I’m leveling up a LI just to take a legacy off it, I’ll name it after the legacy I want so I know when I deconstruct it, which one I want (because at my age, I can’t remember what I had for breakfast half the time, much less which legacy to farm).

Typically I go for the all or nothing approach. Most stuff I don’t bother naming, but when I do I go all out for Lore-Appropriate.

In fact I think the only named items I have right now are my Main’s LIs. He’s GOndorian so I ended up researching appropriate Sindarian names for both of them.

  18. Flavius Says:

Although I like the idea of lore appropriate names, it is rather hard to accompllish, since most of the time it simply involves translation into Sindarin Quenya, which seems especially inappropriate for the men of Rohan. Therefore, I tend to use common naming schemes that fit into the universe, despite being in English. For instance, I tend to name my swords after spiny plants, like Rosethorn or Thistle. If a LI is a gift, I will usually include the name of the person who gave it to me. When crafting weapons, I will often name critical successes based on the weapon type, for instance, a Dwarven great sword may be named Delving Defender.

My captain is currently wielding the sword of omens.

Mini’s songbooks are usually something along the line of “what the fugue” or a club called nutcracker. I try and keep the theme musical in some way for them.

Most of a characters LI’s are named Junk or Trash so I can easily spot the ones I’m going to nuke down for relics.

I’ve a low level champ with critcrafteds called hack (axe) and slash (sword)

Depends on the character. Being a string musician, my hunter’s LIs are mostly named after violin bowing techniques. Having majored in linguistics, my runekeeper’s LIs are named after various linguistics terms, and my minstrel’s LIs tend to be named for composers I’m fond of.

i’m kind of a hypocrite in that while i tend to try and everything in game lore appropriate, I name my LI’s things like Costner of the Kevins and Damon of the Matt.

  24. Sigela Says:

My hunter always calls her LIs “Beau” and “Soared” for her bow and sword respectively.

My burglar named his two daggers “PointyEndFirst” and “PointyEndSecond.”

My RK got in the habit of naming her stones and satchels for their damage affinities and/or their purpose to match another item. So her lightning RK stone was “Thundering Logic” and its accompanying satchel was “Bag of Lightning.” Her healing satchel was called “DoctorDoctor.” Her fire satchel was “Cauterizer.”

For LIs that I’m giving away and so that I know the owner will rename on top of what I call them, I tend to use trademark-ish names with the character name inside like “SigelaWear” or “BuffedbyBilbema.” My jeweler, Ringeras, calls her LI crafting “RingBling.”

Stuff that I’m merely leveling up for a bit to be deconned is almost always called “Donor.”

If someone asks me to give them an item with a lore-appropriate name I’ve got a book that’s “A Guide to Middle Earth” (or something similar) that’s been very handy.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I will name them based on whatever strange thing I am thinking of at the moment, which ties into the funny name choice. Other times (especially on my RK) I will name the ones I’m pretty sure I will keep something to remind me if it’s heal or DPS. Sometimes, I pick something that sounds strong.

I’m very boring with my names. I admire all the clever ones people come up with, but I find short and descriptive work well for me when deconning in a hurry or switching LIs in a fight.
So they are called “Heal”, “DPS”, “Buff”, “Solo”, “Group” or I may occasionally branch out to “Pointy”, “Stab” or “Slice”.

I usually use the help of a Sindarin & Noldorin dictionary to make the names of my legendaries looks like more appropriate to LotR lore.

The legendaries that has my hunter now are a bow called Gwaew Aerlinn (Wind Song) a spear called Laur Hathol (ancient blade) and a sword called Foen Nestad (radiant healing*).

*I put that name to my sword because gives me a lot of bonus to my hunter’s healing skills

Lore-appropriate names! All the way! What’s the point to play a game set in ME if we don’t use those wonderful languages created by the Professor?
Of course, I only use sindarin and even quenya if my toon is an elf or a gondorian man.
For instance, yesterday I acquired my first LI for my LM, a woman from Gondor, and I named her staff “Annúngail”, “bright light of the west”.
Of course, I’m just an enthusiast, not an expert, and I try to use pages like elffetish.com and realelvish.net.

I try to be at least a little lore-ish, but usually I try to find a name that sounds good (ie. you can scream it while attacking that foul orc). I’m pretty good at random names that sound elvish. On the top of my head i’ve fought with Doharon, Caladedhram and Gethrim, to name a few. Just some random letters with an H somewhere in between :)

My main (Damper) however is based on a character I played in tabletob D&D (Kingsley Damper), so I tend to give his weapons names appropriate to his heritage. Last weekend I finally made me a 85 2nd age sword, so that is called Heirloom of Kingsley.

Since my champs name is Knify all my weapons are called something along the lines of Forky, Spoony or Sporky. I usualy never name my rune. On my Mini the names change depending on what I plan on using it for. For healing I like to choose inspirational names and for dps I usualy just call it orc eater/beater/hurter/slasher in evlish. When I craft weapons for kin or friends I always ask them for the name they want if they dont care I like to make funny names based on class or race ex. Hobbits usualy get the name Toothpick

When I craft for others in my kin, I’ll add a name that fits them. I usually craft their draigoch cloaks, so the names reflect on their characters. For my personal LI’s It depends on my mood and the character. I’ve named a weapon “Mother-in-law” (what better name for a battle ax?) but others have elvish names given them thanks to others who have crafted for me.

  43. Siqua of Landroval Says:

I used to give them all appropriate Sindarin names, then I gave them all names in pseudo-phonetic Tsalagi like my characters (I use my own orthography since English Speakers don’t know our ‘v’ is a vowel — specifically it denotes a nasalized-schwa if anybody cares). Since I’ve only come across a couple other people that picked up on what I was doing, I’ve switched to a more Anglophone naming scheme (although I have bumped into a couple distant cousins in-game when they noticed my character names).

Lately, I’ve been giving some of my LIs names like “Memory of Dale” or “Protector of Dale” that are relevant to the character’s RP back-story. Other names are kennings like “Sun On The Grass”, “Talking-Stick”, or “East Star Rising”.

I’ve toyed with the idea of appropriating the name for Sasaki Kojiro’s sword (“The Drying Pole” or “Old Clothes-rod” depending on how you translate “Monohoshi Zao”), but decided this would be like naming an LI Excalibur, Durandal, Naegling, Skofnung, or Glamdring, Orcrist or Sting. In the end, I’d rather make my own names.
