Yule Festival is running this year from December 17, 2012 – January 1, 2013. This guide is here to help you find all the events available.
The quests are mostly broken up into five major regions in Middle Earth.
- Bree Festival Grounds (24.7S, 51.6W Breeland)
- Thorin’s Hall (13.48S, 103.2W Thorin’s Gate) – in the underground Tavern
- Duillond (24.6S, 93.1W Ered Luin)
- Shire Party Tree (29.85S, 71.48W Shire)
- Winter-home (special stable master in the 4 major cities)
What is not included in this guide
The festivals of Middle Earth include certain quests that appear with each and every festival. Please see our guide on these General Festival Quests for help with those events. This would include the
What is New This Year:
- Currency used in the festival has changed.
- No longer are there Yule Festival Tokens and Frostbluff Coins. All currency has been converted to Festival Tokens. These tokens will work similar to the previous currency and will not expire after the festival has closed.
- New currency “Golden Festival Tokens” are now earned through completing tiers of new festival deeds. The deed is called “The More the Merrier” and each tier completed grants Golden Tokens. These deeds will reset each year and Golden Tokens do not expire at the end of the festival. Golden Tokens are also available for purchase from the Festival Barter Vendors in exchange for Festival Tokens.
- New Barter Vendors: Jeffry Bloomer has some normal (older) festival items available and Andy Brown (Golden Festival Token with newer items) are now located in Frostbluff right near the front gate. Not all items require the new Golden Festival Token but the big ticket items such as steeds, war-steed appearances and some special cosmetics require both Festival Tokens and Golden Festival Tokens. Dawson Berwick is also new standing outside by the Festival Stable-Master and sells just horse related items (same exact items Andy Brown also sells).
- Race Token and Documents of Mount Ownership no longer required to obtain the new festival steed. The horse races will still be available and grant Festival Tokens. The steed is purchased from the new Golden Festival Token barter vendor.
- Daily quests in Winter-home can be reset using Festival Tickets (sold in the LOTRO Store). Simply visit the quest NPC, click on the quest and you will be offered the option to reset the quest so you may do it again. There is no NPC handing out Festival Tickets so the only way to earn one this festival is to buy them!
- A auto-bestow quest introduces you to the Yule Festival and will port you directly to Frostbluff.
- A new daily gift giver will give you a sack of presents with an assortment of items after participating in the Yule Festival. Mara Sandydowns “Gift Giver” can be found at the entrance to Winter-Home (near the Town Crier).
- Festival quests grant experience.

Winter-home
Winter-home is the main event for the Yule Festival. It is in a completely separate zone that is accessed by special festival stable-masters in one of the four major cities of Bree, Michel Delving, Celondim, or Thorin’s Hall. The festival stable-master stands directly next to the city’s normal stable-master.
ONLY the quests in Winter-home count towards the “The More the Merrier” deeds. There are quests in the normal landscape but they will not advance the deed.
Starting the Winter-home Quests
An auto-bestow quest will be granted to your character when the festival is active. It will even allow you a quick port to Winter-home so you can begin without the muss and fuss of visiting the festival stable masters.
Yule Festival is Here!
Quest Giver: Auto-bestow Quest System
Level: 1+
Rewards: 3 Festival Token
This quest is granted as a auto-bestow quest when you login. This quest rewards 3 Festival Tokens and it will automatically port you to Frostbluff when you finish it.

Yes Means Snow
Quest Giver: Carolyn Goodnough
Level: 10+
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
Carolyn talks about Virgil who is building snowmen and encourages you to check it out and help. No tokens or coins for this one (although I think I got like 90 copper) but all this quest is doing is directing you to Virgil. I attempted to run straight to Virgil on an alt and he won’t talk to you until you do this quest.
Winter-home Daily Repeatable Quests
New in 2012 is the ability to unlock daily quests to do them again if desired. Cost to reset a daily quest is 1 Festival Ticket which are purchased for 100 Turbine Points.
NOTE THESE ARE USING TICKETS NOT TOKENS. Tickets cannot be obtained through in-game methods during this festival and can only be found in the LOTRO Store. I’m only warning you because I was reading them as tokens at first and wasn’t making the connection they were different.
To reset, simply go to the quest NPC, click on the quest and you will be offered the option to unlock. One ticket unlocks one quest repeatable! Reset quests can advance your deed count for “The More the Merrier”.
Yule Festival (Daily)
Quest Giver: Auto-bestow Quest Ssytem
Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Festival Token and Sack of Presents
This is a new quest this year that is auto-bestowed daily. Mara Sandydowns, a new NPC near the front gate (right next to Guard Kember) hands out presents for participation in the festival.
Complete one quest in Winter-home and she will give you a “Sack of Presents” which will have an assortment of item or items. This is a random draw type prize. You can get festival tokens, marks, unique cosmetics, the hobby horse, etc.
I’d keep an eye on the cosmetic blogs out there as I’m certain they’re going to report any unique cosmetics faster than I am! Feel free to add your findings in the comments below.

Stuffing the Stuffed
Quest Giver: Mabel Mitford
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
- Collect Fresh winterberries – near cabin 12.7N, 93.4W
- collect eggs from pampered chickens – Cluckland 13.3N, 94.6W
- collect pampered mushrooms – in greenhouse 11.8N, 94.3W
- make fresh bread at the servants oven – 12.4N, 95.6W
Unwilling Firewood
Quest Giver: Mabel Mitford
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
Collect 9 pieces of firewood from the best trees. The major doesn’t seem to know the “best trees” are actually wood trolls. Drops off “Grouchy Trees” in The Grumpwood (13.6N, 93.9W). Level 10 walking troll creatures.
The new auto-looting works brilliantly here allowing you to easily go in slaughter 9 and run off without having to stop and pick up all the wood. Open tapping is not so useful as most players will probably be able to one shot kill these guys.
Empty Keg Emergency
Quest Giver: Basil Wyndham (12.2N, 95.3W)
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
Pick up a keg from the servants area near the oven. You must deliver the keg to the Thirsty Patron (12.3N, 95.4W) without being seen by a watcher.
The Biggest Stomach of Them All
Quest Giver: Ona Kay
Level: 10+
Reward: Festival Token at each table
Repeatable: Yes
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
This is a food eating race that you participate in. There are tables of food and you must eat 5 things, check in with the announcer and run to the next station. There are 5 stations in total. Completing the first table will advance “The More the Merrier” deed so you do not have to complete all the tables for the quest to count for that.
There are a couple tricks to completing this race!
The first trick to beating the timer on this is to avoid eating the bread and pies. They take longer to consume and weigh you down. Stick to the mushrooms, berries and eggs.
Eating Contest Debuffs:
- Berries: -1% run speed (4m)
- Mushrooms: -3% run speed (4m)
- Eggs: -5% run speed (4m)
- Pie: -10% run speed (4m)
- Bread: -15% run speed (4m)
- Mystery Drink: Removes all debuffs OR -60% run speed (20s)
The second trick to share is that you DO NOT have to start when Ona says go. If the table is particularly packed with participants trying to gobble up the same food at once it’s likely someone will fail just for food not spawning fast enough or only pie is left. Here’s the pro-tip: the first table has no timer. You don’t even have to be in the area when Ona says go. Collect the quest, keep having fun in Winter-home and run back in a minute or two when the tables will be clear for your solo run.
Eating Contest Rewards:
- 1st table: no coins
- 2nd table: 2 Festival Token
- 3rd table: 3 Festival Token
- 4th table: 4 Festival Token
- 5th table: 4 Festival Token
- Full run = 13 Festival Token
With 2012 you can no longer repeat this quest after you have won unless you purchase a Festival Ticket to reset the quests.
Tidying Up
Quest Giver: Basil Wyndham
Level: 10+
Reward 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
- Pick up dirty dishes
- clean up reeking garbage
- clean up liquid spills
There are many locations throughout the town that have tables full of messes. No timers or limitations, just walk around and clean up the tables.
Tables that are dirty are the same ones used for the eating competition quest “The Biggest Stomach of Them All”
Making Mischief
Quest Giver: Gareth Rust
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
You are to distract patrons of the festival with fireworks and then pick-pocket 8 of them while they stare at the fireworks display. The fireworks is located at the stairs overlooking the festival square (12.2N, 95.4W)
After setting them off patrons will have rings over their heads for you to click on them. Do not worry about the watcher or any of the patrons catching on to your deeds. Simply click them all as quickly as you can as they will eventually wander off when the show is over.
A Charitable Spirit
Quest Giver: Daley Utteridge
Level: 10+
Reward: none
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
Daley asks you to donate a total of 5 Festival Token to various people in town. One token to each person. This quest is not available if you have accepted “Moving them Off” quest but you can pick up this quest after completing “Moving them Off” if you wish.
- Barret Nowell 11.9N, 95.3W
- Ted Ives 12.0N, 95.5W
- Regina Judson 12.1N, 95.6W
- Jack Judson 12.2N, 95.5W
- Bill Hyde 12.3N, 95.5W
There is no reward for this (in fact you’re giving away tokens) except for that of the good feeling inside that you’ve helped some poor folk down on their luck. However, this quest will count towards the “Honored Yule Friend” and “More the Merrier” deeds.
There is a hidden deed associated with this quest. Completing it 10 times will grant you the title “The Openhanded” as well as 50 Festival Token.
Moving Them Off
Quest Giver: Guard Kember
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
You are to chase off the same 5 beggars from “A Charitable Spirit” quest above. Sort of the opposite feel good feeling but this one rewards some Festival Token.
You cannot have this and “Charitable Spirit” quests at the same time but you can complete them both.
Cold as Ice
Quest Giver: Daley Utteridge
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-home
The frost grims in the area are making life difficult for the less fortunate who have been forced to move outside of the city walls. You are asked to drive the grims off.
The grims are on the frozen lake on the east side of the map (12.7N, 93.7W). They are level 10 beasts and should not be an issue for most adventurers to kill, however they have a unique debuff called Whiteout that essentially bleaches out your screen when near them and reduces your run speed by –25%.
All you need to kill is 4 of them to complete the quest.
The Abominable Snow-Beasts
Quest Giver: Guard Kember
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-home
You are charged to go drive off the snowbeasts in the area for the safety of the winter-home festivities.
The snowbeasts can be found in the lightly wooded area in the southeast corner of the map (12.2N, 93.6W).
The snowbeasts dislike noise and cheer and you shoo them off by using the /cheer emote at three of them while having them targeted. This can even be done on horseback if desired. The snowbeasts do not attack so do not fear having to fight them.
Filling the Field
Quest Giver: Virgil Greenfield (12.6N, 95.2W)
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yes Means Snow
Virgil asks for help building snowmen. He has 5 snowmen templates and you choose which of the 5 you wish to build.
- Coal is found up at the servant’s oven in Winter-home.
- Acorns are found on the ground under the trees near the snowman field.
- Sticks are gathered from bushes near the snowman field
- Carrots are located at the chicken farm
- All other items are scattered inside winter-home
Pro-tip for helping find these items:
- Go to settings > UI settings and turn on “Selection Indicator” (if not already on) and make sure “Show Selection Indicator in Combat Only” is not selected.
- Go to settings > Combat options and turn on “Directional Selection Indicator”
- Tap the delete key (default setting to target usable objects near you). The two settings above will point you in the direction of the object you found and put a big arrow over it.

Building all five grants a deed (see the deed section). The quickest way to get your tokens and be finished is to simply build the broken snowman.
Final Quests: Help the Poor or the Rich
When you complete 30 quests in Winter-Home, you complete the deed ‘’Honoured Yule-friend’’ that gives you 2 Festival Token. It also unlocks the final quests of Winter-Home.
The final quests of Winter-Home are given by the NPC Albert Yule. He asks you to choose between helping the poor or the rich citizens of Frostbluff.
Choosing one quest makes you ineligible to complete the other one (although you can come back and do it on an alt). You get to preview of both cosmetic items they give. Choosing one side will lead you along a short quest line before you finally get your hands on the cosmetics.
These quests are a one time deal, they are not dailies!
This quest will not open again if you completed it in past years as is was tied to completing a deed.
Self-Sacrifice: Support the Poor
Quest Giver: Albert Yule
Level: 10+
Reward: cosmetics, 5 Yule Tokens & Title “The Blameless”
Repeatable: No
Pre-requisite: Complete Honoured-Yule Friend deed.
Completing this quest will grant you a full beggar’s outfit of shabby clothing. You have a choice of a tunic or a robe for the chest piece.
Note: there is a hidden quest that triggers 40 days after completion of this quest that will grant you the Frostbluff Robe and Frostbluff Dress of Thanks. Only supporting the poor will get you these items. They are bound but can easily be tossed into shared wardrobe to be worn by other alts.
Gain and Glory: Support the Rich
Quest Giver: Albert Yule
Level: 10+
Reward: cosmetics, 5 Yule Tokens & Title “Miser”
Repeatable: No
Pre-requisite: Complete Honoured-Yule Friend deed.
Completing this quest will grant you a full set of extravagant clothing. You have a choice of a robe or tunic for the chest piece.
The Frostbluff Theater
The Frostbluff Theater
Quest Giver: Hobbit (12.2N 95.5W)
Level: 10+
Reward: 4 Festival Token
Repeatable: Daily
Pre-requisite: Yule Celebration of Winter-Home
Attend a performance of the Frostbluff Theater.
The Frostbluff Theater has two parts to it: The audience member and the actors. As soon as 3 players are in the theatre, a representation of the play can start. If there are more than 3 players in the theatre, 3 random players are selected among the audience to become actors in the presentation.
Because of the 3 person limit, I do advise you to do this early in the festival season or be prepared to beg some kinnies to do it with you. Events like these are typically wildly popular at the start and then peeter out when people have done them several times. By the end of the festival it may be difficult to start a performance because of the 3 person minimum.
You can be in the audience and possibly selected as an actor as many times as you wish as there is no limit to the number of performances you watch.
Being in the Audience
Being active while in the audience is optional, but you will complete deeds for throwing flowers or rotten fruits to the actors (see deed listing above).
To do so, you must purchase flowers or rotten fruits at the hobbit vendors inside Frostbluff theatre sold for 4 copper pieces each at the theatre titled ‘’concessions’’. When an actor performs a relevant emote, you get a warning to throw flowers. When he performs an emote that doesn’t make sense with the play, you get to throw rotten fruit. Successful actors emoting are highlighted with white flashing arrows. Bad actors in red arrows.
It is helpful to pay attention to what part each is actor is playing (they have an icon over their head, and a buff you can see if you select them) and be prepared for their upcoming part so you can be ready to toss rotten fruit or flowers at them as needed. I put my flowers and fruit in quickslots for easy access. You only have 10 seconds afte
r they have emoted (or failed to) in which you can “reward” their performance.
Being an Actor
When you get selected to be an actor, you are teleported backstage where you have about 2 minutes to know your role. You will hear the person presenting the play on the stage calling your name and the role you were cast in.
There are 3 roles in the play: the villain, the protagonist and extra. You can also know which part of the play you are cast in by looking at the icon over your head.
You can talk to the NPCs backstage to get information about the kind of emote would be appropriate to do on stage. There will be an NPC to talk to for your specific role. They will not tell you exactly what emotes to use but will guide you to the type you need.
If you are not familiar with the emotes available in LOTRO you can type /emotelist in game or see the emotes listed on the lorebook. Note that some of the emotes in the list may be hidden deeds or store exclusives that are not available to you.
You are then teleported to the stage, where the action begins. There are NPCs on stage that are telling the story and are there to help you play your part.
You must listen (read!) to what the narrator and the actor in your role has to say to get further tips on what kind of emote will be appropriate to do. You will get a warning when the time has come to perform your emote.
To perform an emote for the play, you MUST target the audience (just click on the public) otherwise it won’t count.
You can throw fruits and flowers to other actors as an actor so feel free to do so and work on those deeds while on stage!
As the story goes on, every actor will have 3 emotes to perform. The order in which emotes are performed by the Actors in the play:
- Extra
- Villain
- Protagonist
- Extra
- Villain
- Protagonist
- Extra
- Protagonist
- Villain
After the end of the play, you are teleported back into the audience.
Titles
- Completing the event you will win a title for the role you played (Protagonist, Villain or Extra).
- If you successfully performed two emotes you will earn the “Star of the Show” title.
- Perform two emotes poorly and you are granted the title “Laughing-Stock”.
- Perform as all three roles to earn the “Thespian” title.
These same titles are also available to buy with Festival Token from the vendors in the theater if you are not lucky enough to be selected to act.
Also don’t miss the subtle Muppet easter egg to be found in the theater. Some familiar critics can be found in their standard heckling spot.
Snowball Fight
Not far away from the main city of Winter-home is a snowman filled field set aside for a game of snowball fights!
Snow piles will be usable while event is active. Use them to gather Perfect Snowballs. Piles can randomly give 1-3 snowballs. Snowballs will disappear from your inventory after the event is over and the snowballs from the festival vendors will not count on the snowball field.
There are two quests available labeled easy and hard. There is a deed for completing both quests. (See deeds section above).
Easy
Gather snowballs and hit 10 players in the snow arena. What makes this easy is you don’t have to do it all at once. You can finish this in several rounds if need be.
Reward 2 Festival Token.
Hard
Gather snowballs and hit 15 players within one round of a snowball fight.
Reward 4 Festival Token
Pro-tips:
- Ctrl+Tab will select the nearest player
- Add the snowballs to your quick slot bar for easy access
- You do not have to stand still to throw snowballs
- Quests are available 3 minutes after last event ended. 1 minute warning given before the next event starts. Event completes a cycle approximately every 9 minutes.
There is an effect added when hit by snowballs that will slow you down. The effect stacks as you are hit and increases the severity of the slowdown. The highest I was able to get it to stack was up to tier 5 but the debuff only lasted 6 seconds.
With 2012 you can no longer repeat this quest after you have won unless you purchase a Festival Ticket to reset the quests.
Breeland Quests
More Boar for Bree
Quest Giver: Sally
Blackwort (24.7S, 51.5W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
The Festival Cook is asking you to find the missing dried boar meat that was stolen by the wolves. You must go to the “Snarling Hollow” (24.1S, 54.7W) west of the Festival Grounds and you will find the slabs of meat around there. It’s a small area and you only need to find five. It isn’t difficult.
The only part that may be a tad difficult is even though this is listed as a level 1 quest, the wolves in this area are level 18 and 19. If it appears dangerous for your level, be sure to bring a friend.
An Ailing Tradition of Ale
Quest Giver: Wim Wheatsheaf (24.6S, 51.5W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
The cart delivering the festival ale was attacked by brigands and the Festival Brew-Master wants you to go and recover what is left of them. You will find an ale-cask by the lake just past Thornely’s Work Site at 27.0S, 54.1W. There were no brigands to be found. Just a broken cart and a cask. This can be easily accomplished by any level without any difficulties.
Thorin’s Hall Quests
Snow for a White Yule
Quest GIver: Gloi (In Undeground Tavern)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
This odd dwarf is planning on piling snow in a cart and bring it to Bree. He asks you help him gather snow. There’s snow everywhere but apparently he only wants ones I find in small piles.
Head out of Thorin’s gate and start looking around 15.5S, 104.0W and you’ll find snow piles you can gather. The monsters I saw around are level 5 or lower. Only the level 5 I spotted was aggressive.
Dwarf-Ice
Quest Giver: Imi (in Underground Tavern)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat Timer: 15 hours
This cook is looking to make some desert but needs some more ice and berries. Head out of Thorin’s Gate and to 14.4S, 103.9W. There is a frozen pond and waterfall. One of the pieces of the frozen waterfall is able to be gathered. The berries he is looking for is in the center of the pond on a little snow covered island. There were no monsters around this area making this a very quick and easy quest to complete.
Duillond Quests
Wreathed in Fir
Quest Giver: Anglalaith (24.6S, 93.0W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
This Festival Patron is putting together a evergreen wreath but has ran out of branches and asks that you collect some more for him. They aren’t far just a little west of Duillond and I ran into some Fir Branches. Start looking around 24.0S, 94.3W and you’ll see them glowing. There are some boars in the area at around level 9 but that’s pretty easy to dispatch or you could probably even avoid them if you fear they will attack you.
The Season of Merry-Making
Quest Giver: Saervereth (24.6S, 93.1W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
This Festival Patron is in need of some mistletoe and asks you to go gather some for her. Head towardsThrasi’s Lodge and you’ll see some trees glowing on the side of the road. Look around 21.8S, 93.8W. The trees contain the mistletoe you are looking for.
This area of forest is a little more populated, primarily with bears around level 11 and 12.
Shire Quests
Ribbons and Bows
Quest Giver: Daisy Boffin (29.9S, 71.6W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
The Party Planner has underestimated the amount of ribbon needed for the festival and needs you to travel to Overhill to find the boxes of ribbon and gather red and blue berries so she can dye the ribbon.
Travel north on the road to Overhill and you will find the boxes along the road at around 28.9S, 70.6W. A little off the road in the wooded area you will find the red and blue flowers growing. The most fearsome thing I encountered in the wood was a level 10 boar and a level 11 bear so take note of that if you are doing this on a newer character.
Good Cheer and Warm Cider
Quest Giver: Samfast Longburrow (29.9S, 71.
5W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 2 Festival Token
Repeat: Daily
The festival Brew-Master is looking to make some cider but has ran out of apples from Appledore’s Orchard. This is very quick and easy. Head directly west of Samfast and you’ll be in Appledore’s orchard where there are apples on the ground for you to pick up. There are no monsters save a random shrew or two in the area so it’s easily and quickly completed by anyone.
Yuletide Woes Quest Chain
Quest Givers: Hal Hornblower, Bogo Chubb, Daddy Twofoot, Holly Hornblower, Postman Grubb,Opal Goodbody, Gaffer Gamgee, Shirriff Robin Smallburrow, Hereward Loamsdown
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: Yule-Tree
There are many Hobbits in Hobbiton that can give you this quest (listed above). Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has been named the Yule-Planner for Hobbiton and you’re asked to inquire amongst the local Hobbits how this happened. You can inquire with some hobbits but you are pointed to talk to Ted Sandyman and search his mill. You will find and invitation at the mill which you are to take to Mayor Will Whitfoot in Michel Delving.
The mayor claims there is nothing he can do about this but to search for the Book of Festival-law for more options which is kept in the Great Smials library in Tuckburough and return it to him.
The book states Yule-Planner can be changed with a petition with 10 signatures and you are sent to Hobbiton to gather signatures. All of the original potential quest givers will agree to sign your petition. Ted Sandyman will refuse to sign. That is 9 signatures but go to Lobelia and Marigold Gamgee will arrive to sign the 10th signature.
Afterwards go speak with Gaffer Gamgee for your very own Yule-Tree to place in your home’s front yard. This quest is not repeatable and can only be done once per character total. If you did this quest in past years, you will not be able to do it again.
Yule Festival Mounts
The quest and method to obtain the festival mounts is the same as other festivals. See General Festival Quests for information on that quest. However, I wanted to share pictures of the mounts available so you can decide if you need them!

Must have completed “More the Merrier – Tier 3”. |
Rewards
The rewards available are fun and very festive. I am afraid I will have to collect them all! All are purchased using the Festival Token you’ve been collecting.
Gift Boxes
Gift boxes are purchased from festival vendors. There are special race (hobbit, elf, etc) gift boxes hand out a wide array of cosmetics, goodies and housing items.
The supreme legendary gift box only gives coal (which I’ve heard some crafters stock up on as it is cheap coal).
- Bree-Land Gift Box – 10 tokens
- Hobbit Gift Box – 10 tokens
- Elf Gift Box – 10 tokens
- Dwarf Gift Box – 10 tokens
- ‘Supreme Legendary Gift’ Boxes – 1 token
Consumables
See the deeds section above for deeds related to these consumables!
- Frosty Beverages – 5 tokens for 5 drinks
When consumed you will have a shot of snow around your character. - Snow-Jars – 5 tokens for 5 jars
This causes a snow storm to rain in your general area and people will actually faint or be forced prone on the ground due to the snow. - Grim Crystals – 5 tokens for 5 crystals
This summons a very brief swirl of snow cloud which a frost grim will rise from and then disappear. People in the area are forced to cower at the sight. - Piles of Fluffy Snow – 5 tokens for 5 piles
Puts a snow tornado around a person and causes them to dust themselves off. - 5 Rotten Fruit: 5 Token (these will not work inside the theater)
- 5 Bag of Flower Petals: 5 Token (these will not work inside the theater)
- 5 Perfect Snowballs: 5 Token (these will not work in the snowball fight)
Titles
Titles are available from the barter vendors for 10 Festival Tokens Each. They all can be earned from the theater quest if selected to perform in the play.
- Title Writ – Thespian
- Title Writ – Star of the Show
- Title Writ – Protagonist
- Title Writ – Villain
- Title Writ – Extra
- Title Writ – Laughing-Stock
Housing Items
Kiarane has collected all the items, the details on how to get them and pictures of what they look like in her Yule Festival Furniture and Decoration Guide. Many housing items are picked up by luck of the draw in the race gift boxes like the snow-globes.
Maps
There are 4 maps to collect available from the barter vendors for 15 tokens each. All four of these maps are part of the 21 required for the Eriador Cartographer Deed.
Cosmetics
Images can be clicked on to see slightly larger views. There are also the special cosmetic items that cannot be purchased with tokens from the final quests. See Winter-home quests above for more details.
See Cosmetic LOTRO’s post for color options available for the new items.

Is the war steed cosmetic set dyeable?
December 18, 2012 at 2:21 am
Yes, they are.
December 18, 2012 at 1:19 am
I’m a Grouchy Tree thanks to the whole daily quest thing.
December 18, 2012 at 1:35 am
FYI, a kinmate confirmed that the sack of presents can contain a tarnished symbol of Celebrimbor.
December 18, 2012 at 9:00 pm
However, the symbol is bound to account. A kinmate got one, and couldn’t make anything for himself because of that. He ended up making something for a friend, and luckily the LI was not bound to account. A little bit of a bummer, though, to get a symbol you can’t use on your own character.
December 20, 2012 at 10:10 pm
You can always drop it in the vault until the time comes that you can use it for yourself.
December 18, 2012 at 1:48 am
Another significant change with this year’s Yule Festival: all quests are now on-level and grant experience!
Full write-up here: http://lotrolibrary.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/level-up-with-festival-quests/
December 18, 2012 at 5:53 am
Yes, this was mentioned in the dev diary.

Ha!
Turbine REALLY wants those of us who prefer not to level our characters too quickly (so we can maintain a fun and interesting challenge while leveling up or for other reasons), to have to buy that Disable XP pocket item in the store.
As much as I REALLY hate the inability to turn off XP (and have been quite vocal about that) I for one will NOT be giving in to this ploy of having to pay to get rid of something they are giving us that we don’t want. Ha! Unbelievable. Could you imagine if they said “Everyone we are going to make all your toons level 75, but you can pay for a pocket item that will require you to level.”
Well… I’m sure there are many who would love that.
That said, I might buy this XP disabler if a) It was an account wide toggle feature under 995 TP – though I might still wait till it went on sale and b) It was not a pocket item – I like challenge but do also like to be as well equipped as I am able per level I’m at.
Otherwise, this is a huge HUUUUGGGE slap in the face to those who’ve been asking for some way to slow down the leveling progression and the massive amounts of XP we were already getting, before they added numerous more ways to now get leveling XP against our will.

On further thought, while I was really looking forward to this festival, I think I’ll be sitting it out this year. I’ll do just enough quests on some of my alts that don’t have the older model horses so I can get them before they are only available in the store.
December 18, 2012 at 3:34 am
Great guide, thank you!!
December 18, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Gotta second this. Amazing job Goldenstar!
December 18, 2012 at 3:46 am
Are festival currencies supposed to convert from the wallet to the new currency, does anyone know?
December 18, 2012 at 6:01 am
Not all previous ones at this time. Like your fall festival tokens should still be called Fall Festival Tokens in your wallet I believe. This festival is only converting Yule Festival Tokens and Frostbluff Coins.
It should move all your old tokens into the barter wallet though. If you have any in your vault you can clear up some space.
December 18, 2012 at 11:00 am
Confirmed – I moved my old tokens out of my vault. They moved into my wallet and did not convert to festival tokens. So I still have 40 fall tokens :S
December 18, 2012 at 2:47 pm
All my tokens are in my wallet already, I was just wondering if the conversion of festival currency was happening for those who don’t have the enhanced wallet. If the conversion was happening for those people, that would have led me to believe that the conversion was also supposed to be happening for those of us with the enhanced wallet, but wasn’t for one reason or another.
I suspect they are going to convert as each new festival is launched, to avoid people suddenly having a huge number of tokens at once.
Thanks for your replies!
December 18, 2012 at 3:59 am
I really like the change. Love the daily present, and prefer not having to do the horse run. And xp too.
December 18, 2012 at 4:34 am
Wow, I really like the new horned cloak… Seems I need to grind this year…
December 18, 2012 at 4:39 am
Thanks again for a wonderful write-up. The festival guides was how I originally found CSTM and they are still the best source of information for the festivals.
December 18, 2012 at 5:23 am
Are you sure the festival quartermasters are actually available? Because i failed to find both elven and the man quartermasters…
December 18, 2012 at 6:02 am
The vendors in Winter-home sell all the boxes. You can get them there.
December 19, 2012 at 2:49 pm
I’m sorry, but can u tell me what the festival quatermaster is? I haven’t seen that mentioned yet. Sooo much wonderful info to take in!!!
Thank u Goldenstar!!!!!!!!
December 19, 2012 at 2:58 pm
The festival vendors are all in Winter-home. There are no quartermasters this year.
December 18, 2012 at 8:33 am
Is the sparkler animated? I love the new cosmetics, especially the hairy ones
December 18, 2012 at 8:59 am
I would hope so but it didn’t show animated in the preview for the dressing room. I haven’t purchased anything and that certainly wasn’t in my plans to be the first item
December 18, 2012 at 4:22 pm
Yes it is, I had one on bullroarer. It’s neat, it sends out white jagged (like cartoon lightning) sparks approx. 8 inches from the tip.
December 19, 2012 at 4:39 pm
i just got one and its sparkly purty goodness
December 19, 2012 at 8:59 pm
I hear you can dual-wield them and have even weirder sparkly goodness…
December 18, 2012 at 9:04 am
I am not going to bother with Lotro’s festival.
GW2 has a much better one going and I will be wasting my time over there.
I just wish the Lotro festival quest button would stay Declined!
It pops up every time I go into or come out of an instance or log in.
December 18, 2012 at 1:28 pm
A way to have the festival stay declined would be good because I certainly don’t want to do it on every alt. Plus if you do accept it you can only get rid of the next quest action that comes up by completing it, which then ports you to Winterhome. And then you can’t get right back to where you were.
December 18, 2012 at 10:00 am
From the daily gift quest I’ve gotten a Tome of Fate I and two of the spiral-horned cloaks (all bound to account.) Personally I’m holding off on getting cosmetics until I see what other goodies may drop from those presents!
December 18, 2012 at 11:13 am
The items from the daily gift appear to be variations of what you can get from the barter vendor. For example:
The spiral-horned cloak isn’t the same as the horned cloak offered by the vendor. Also The Wintry Cap is different than the Wintry Hat on the vendor.
December 20, 2012 at 6:24 am
You are probably quite wrong with “exactly the same”, at least if we speak about snow-beast cloaks. Vendor one has straight horns, and one I’ve got from box have (according to it’s name) spiral sheep-alike horns.
Haven’t purchased vendor cloak yet tho, so can’t yet be sure they differ.
December 21, 2012 at 5:41 pm
I think you mis-read what I wrote as I said that they aren’t the same. Quite the opposite from “exactly the same”
December 18, 2012 at 11:42 am
GS, You are over-the-top amazing for assembling this so quickly!
One correction for Snowball Fight, you wrote “You can only do one of the quests (Easy or Hard) per day.” ~~~ You can actually do both per day as daily quests and both count toward the More the Merrier.
Total daily Frostbluff quests that count toward deed appear to be 14.
Have a great Yule Holiday!
December 18, 2012 at 11:54 am
I didn’t not have this option when I did it. I did the hard version first after completion I only had the option to reset the quests – I did not have the option to do the easy version. I will be trying again tonight and if it has changed I will update.
December 18, 2012 at 1:30 pm
You have to wait for the quest the fight to be about to begin before you can see the ‘new quest’ because the quest is only offered shortly before the fight begins.
If there’s no new quest ready to be offered, all you can do is reset, as a result its easy to miss that you can do easy and hard in a day =)
December 18, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Thanks. I did sit there but perhaps I just missed the next start. It was rather late and I had the game up while I was typing the guide. Like I said. I will verify and THEN update.
December 18, 2012 at 11:00 pm
I almost missed it again because i was checking my email. I’m apparently horrible at waiting for stuff to happen but it is able to both and I’ve updated the guide. Thanks guys.
December 18, 2012 at 12:26 pm
Thanks Goldenstar, great guide as always, even answered my question about token conversion in the comments.
December 18, 2012 at 12:27 pm
Does it matter which of the tables you go to during the food/eating contest quest or can it be any of them?
December 18, 2012 at 1:06 pm
Yes you have to do them in order. Only the table you are on will have food glowing on it for you to eat.
You start at Ona Kay, Go down the stairs to those tables, up the stairs to the tables across from the fireworks box, straight back to the tables at the end of the walkway and then down the stairs past near the ovens to the tables at the bottom of the stairs.
You will not be able to run the quest any other way.
December 18, 2012 at 4:19 pm
Another tip: if you have time when you finish eating and before you click the gold quest ring to advance to the next table, mount up on a regular (non-war steed) horse. That way you can get to the next table without worrying about the speed de-buff. Also, if you have any coffee, it helps (barely) to mitigate the speed de-buff. Best thing is if you can drink the drink LAST (5/5) so you can get rid of all the slowness (possibly). But only do it if you have 20 seconds left…
December 19, 2012 at 6:45 am
wow thanks for that tip Peter, I never thought to use the horses or coffee
Though I did get a new Frost Steed, debating about getting some of the cosmetic stuff or even the decorating things.
December 19, 2012 at 12:31 pm
lol and I made a fool of myself, got to teh second table ate all 5 pieces of food but then didn’t remember that the guy i needed to talk to was behind me, so I ran off to the next set of tables only to realize my mistake too late. thus failed for a second day
December 18, 2012 at 4:06 pm
I got a tome of Will I (adds 10 will to your stats) from the sack of gifts. I am currently logging in on every alt, do 1 quest per alt, get the sack of gifts and hope for a good drop.
December 18, 2012 at 4:28 pm
I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet but remember the Elbrandir’s Horseshoe helps with festival chances like getting the Skeleton Horse from the Haunted Burrow. I’m not waiting to be told it also helps with the sack of presents. My first sack of presents got me the Spiral Horned cloak with the horseshoe equipped.
December 18, 2012 at 4:31 pm
A quick note on that, not all my alts have the shoe yet but I’m thinking it’s fine to do the daily and save the presents till I actually do that section of the epic. Also thanks for the awesome guide, there’s much I would never have known about without it!
December 19, 2012 at 2:14 pm
They dont stack. You might find thats a lot of bag space..
December 19, 2012 at 3:03 pm
Wow!!! Where do I get an Elbrandir’s Horseshoe?
December 18, 2012 at 6:43 pm
I have been able to do both snowball fights (usually failed each due to no one being around to fight with) on several characters, tho other characters have only had one fight allowed. may it be tied to prior deed completion?
my gift boxes (best part of the festival imo) have been two hats, prizes of 2 yule tokens, or prizes of varying amts of marks up to 500.
December 18, 2012 at 9:49 pm
The cool down times for all the Frostbluff quests are 24 hours. The quest times reset at about 2 or 3 a.m. (game-time) so the quest may seem to have a shorter cool-down time, depending on when you finish the quests relative to the 3 a.m. reset.
In Update 9 – Yule Festival Mara “Aubergine” Patton explains that players who “want the more unique rewards” must complete tiers 2 and 3 of “The More the Merrier” deeds. That means finishing 120 quests total for Tier 3 if we want the additional cosmetics and War-steed Yule appearance traits. This will require “nearly daily participation in the festival while it is live”. Those who have limited time during the busy holidays can choose to “purchase Festival Tickets to repeat any quest in Frostbluff as many times as you like”. How convenient…for Turbine. And remember, “all festival quests are now dailies” with a 24 hour cool down.
This is what so many of the beta players were complaining about on Bullroarer, with little or no response from Turbine. They have created several desirable new items that we cannot get unless we complete all the 24 hr cool-down quests every single day during this short festival time-frame. Turbine knows most people will not be able to play everyday during the busy holidays (and a game that has gone offline 3 times this week so far), so they are trying to compel those who want these ‘unique rewards’ to buy festival tickets from The Store. But is it a ‘reward’ if we have to pay for it? I’m not sure how long it will take most regular players who do not read the forums to realize they cannot get the warsteed cosmetics and other “unique rewards” without a store purchase. By then I imagine many will have already skipped one of the essential days to get it ‘free’ with the long daily grind.
Also, as predicted on the Bullroarer forum, the snowball area is virtually empty (on my server) since it was given a 24 hour cool-down time. Sad because last year that was a fun hang-out during the festival for players to socialize and play an amusing game as long as they wanted. I wonder if Turbine will ruin the Beer Brawl the same way next year.
Thanks for the Grind that Stole Yule Fest, Turbine. At least you’re consistent.
December 18, 2012 at 11:09 pm
I got an ‘Elite Rohirrim War Steed COsmetic Set’ out of my bag of presents. It looks rather like the green armour you see on the steeds around the area. I don’t know if it can be dyed as I’ve not purchased any colours.
That Sparkler looks painful… Character’s gonna burn their little hand holding it like that. Does it actually sparkle/flame?
December 19, 2012 at 1:29 am
Just came from Frostbluff, the new Wintry Yule Robes are beautiful..the place was hoppin on the Riddermark!!
December 19, 2012 at 7:23 am
Yes it does. It doesn’t quite look as you’d expect but it is animated and ‘active’ when held. Side note, it’s able to be held in both hands for sweet sparkin’ duel wielding. Sadly they did the unthinkable, they didn’t give it a damage rating so no sparring with them.
December 19, 2012 at 12:18 pm
So apparently I’m a vendor at frostbluff.
I’ve heard of direct marketting but this might be taking it too far.
December 19, 2012 at 1:10 pm
>Golden Tickets do not expire at the end of the festival.
They were said to expire after end of each festival, so im wondering, is it corrected, and if it is, where it is said then? Since i probably wont be able to do Tier3 (for warhorse cosmetics) at all in the quite limited time set for festival (and with snowball fight empty almost 100% when i go there), and i got problems with eating quest, and it counting only on last leg so far (3 fails from 3). So its the dailies only.
December 19, 2012 at 1:55 pm
This was changed while still on Bullroarer and went live. I believe the deeds WILL reset but the tokens you earn do not expire and go away after the festival closes.
http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?491301-Yule-Festival-Modifications
The eating quest should count for the deed after completing the first table. This was in the release notes and how it worked for me when I tried it. You do not need to finish all the tables to get the deed to advance.
December 19, 2012 at 3:09 pm
To get the deed for the eating contest, I had to complete all 5 tables in time. When I was failing at getting to them all, the deed did not open.
December 19, 2012 at 3:22 pm
“These deeds will reset each year”
Are you sure about this? So if I don’t get 120 quests done this year, next year it will reset to 0?
December 19, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Since I didn’t’ design it and its not next year, no I’m not positive.
However, I am fairly certain that this is the design though. The new vendor requiring golden tokens will have the new items and the older stuff get shuffled to the old stuff vendor. You have to re-do the deeds, earn the golden tokens in order to earn the new stuff. The Golden Tokens do not expire so you will have those next year.
First round of the festival on Bullroarer was counting previous quest runs of the Yule Festival (I had started with tier 2 completed and almost to tier 3 – and this was back with the higher deed requirements). It was noted as a known issues and that the deeds would purposely be set to zero when on live.
I can’t point to a place that says explicitly that these will reset next year but I am fairly certain that is the design. As stated in the dev diary:
“For players who like having challenges to complete and who want the more unique rewards, they can choose to complete tiers 2 and 3 of “The More the Merrier” deeds for additional cosmetics and the War-steed set of appearance traits that match the new Wintry Yule Steed.
The deeds are being used as a way to gate the higher end rewards and is the primary way of earning Golden Tickets to buy these rewards.
December 21, 2012 at 3:58 pm
Hopefully instead of resetting the deeds they simply add more tiers for next years rewards or even better remove the gated mechanism completly!
December 19, 2012 at 4:42 pm
I cant count the number of times I have run this festival thru my alts, most of whom have all the deeds. At least 15 alts multiplied by the number of times to get the deeds.. .bleah. hundreds. So glad Ill get to repeat this ad nauseum if I want to get the new shinies every year. hopefully they will pull their respective heads out and change it by next year.
i really dont get the motivation for the tier grind… you already have to do quests in order to get the loot each year.
December 19, 2012 at 4:46 pm
A quick note on the tickets. I was surprised to see some in my barter wallet, knowing that I had not purchased any. Upon some investigation, I see that there are at least 2 deeds I completed in the past which awarded me Festival Tickets now.
The deeds were as follows:
Much Drinking, Much Running
Much Eating, Much Running
Each of these deeds awarded 6 Festival tickets, apparently.
December 21, 2012 at 5:46 pm
yes previous festival tickets are the same. The Festival Tickets were introduced with the Anniversary Festival this year. Those will work for the resets. There is no vendor in frostbluff that hands out tickets like previous festivals.
December 19, 2012 at 4:54 pm
Buy tickets, no.
Wait 6 months and buy them directly from the store, yes.
December 20, 2012 at 3:50 am
A note on cheering the snowbeasts – you can cheer the same snowbeast three times in quick succession, even as it’s getting up and walking around, and it counts for the quest. You *can’t* cheer a walking snowbeast that someone else has woken up, so it might be considerate to just wake one and cheer it three times, so others don’t have to wait for them all to reset.
December 20, 2012 at 6:36 am
Speaking about ticket-using quest reset, I’m probably the only person who is not disappointed with this idea. I had plenty of time and broken dwarf beer-races this summer, you know. So I’ve got like 50-100 of this tickets for each of my main toons. More than enough for me to get my shiny Yule items.
December 20, 2012 at 1:20 pm
oh my god, im almost to tier 2 and i could just vomit on all the repetition. thru the years i have run each of these stupid quests countless times. earning all the deeds on many alts. To sit and watch that crappy tier 3 gate in order to get the few things I really want has sucked the last living fun out of the festival.
and to think I get to repeat another 180 q, per char, per festival or to opt out of pretty decent cosmetics in protest. whatever the choice the result is the same feeling of crap.
December 22, 2012 at 9:02 am
Each of the 6 titles gained in the Theatre will reward you with 5TP
December 22, 2012 at 10:49 pm
I discovered today that you can’t have the eating contest active and do the tidying up quest.
December 23, 2012 at 8:27 pm
Let’s make some math:
We have 14 quests repeatable daily. (The auto-bestwoed one doesn’t count for the deed, I verified it on two alts.)
We need 120 quests for Tier 3 of the deed.
So, that makes: 120/14= 8,6 = 9 days to have the 120 quests.
The Festival runs for 16 days, which is just shy of twice the number of days needed to do the 120 quests, provided you do every quest every day.
Each quest gives 4 tokens, except those 3:
Biggest Stomach: 13 for a successful run,
Snowball Easy: 2 Tokens
Charitable Spirit: – 5
That means that a full run gives you:
((14-3)*4)+13+2-5= 54 tokens per day.
Hence, when you have finally completed the Tier 3 of the Merrier deed, you should have:
54*9= 486 tokens + 6 golden tockets
Should be more than enough to get the shinies. And 9 days of grind on 16 days of Festival is not that much, in my humble opinion. (However, I do despise the fact that festival quests gives XP, as well as crafting.)
And this is not counting the one-time additional quests for the hidden deeds and such, nor the rewards from the auto-bestowed. I did got stacks of 10 tokens from this quest on a toon, then mostly Marks and Medaillons. But none of my toon are over lvl 40, might explain why I don’t get much else.
December 24, 2012 at 1:42 pm
Ah, but there is a different deed, where if you do the charitable spirit quest 10 times, it gives you 50 tokes, so you lose none. That would be 59 per day, plus one more day for that last charitable spirit quest, which should be no problem considering what you’ve done for the deed so far, and you get 536 tokens plus 6 golden tokens. I think it’s worth the extra quest to do that.
December 24, 2012 at 4:14 am
Can you leave and use the festival stablemaster to get back for free an unlimited number of times? Or just once?
December 24, 2012 at 1:34 pm
should be unlimited.
December 24, 2012 at 9:34 am
um,
I just got a hidden deed with the festival. anyone else get fire breather?
the deed says:
You know how to impress an Audience.
grants title and emote fire breather.
nice!
December 24, 2012 at 10:44 am
What you actually got was a hidden emote for being /cheer at 100 times.
http://casualstrolltomordor.com/2009/09/hidden-emotes-and-titles/
December 24, 2012 at 12:17 pm
oh ok, thanks Goldenstar, I remember now that deed. Cheers!
December 26, 2012 at 9:41 am
Thanks for this helpful guide!
