I’ve found little reason to use Steam to play LoTRO specifically. There aren’t any Steam achievements for the game and the steam client just takes up system resources.

There are plenty of good reasons to use it! Friends list, groups, in-game web browser (this one alone makes it a must – alt-tabbing is just broken in lotro) just to name few most important ones. And it doesn’t really take that many resources, it’s only RAM so unless you have less than 1GB you shouldn’t see any performance drops.

alt-tabbing works fine if you have another window open such as a browser.

As of Monday, LOTRO will use its own copy of Awesomium for the in-game browser. That’s exactly the same one used by Steam. It lacks an address bar, but if you leave yourself a few handy links on myLOTRO, it functions similarly.

I bought the Steam package, downloaded the thing to get the TP and horse and then removed the Steam part from my computer.

I do not use Steam, but I did purchase the Steam starter pack because like many others I have a mount obsession.

Ditto. I have an obsession with mounts so I purchased the Steam starter pack for the great mount.

But, I am open to consider using it if there is a benefit.

Although Steam is not the worst culprit of obtrusive unneccessary data mining, I try to stay off their site and only use it for Skyrim.

I have a steam account in order to play War in the North (and created it via that game client, iirc), but still found myself having to select the “What is steam?” option, lol.

Been using steam for 7 years now so it kind of made sense to have lotro through steam. As with other mmo’s you steam wont keep the game updated but it does stop downlaods while you’re playing which can be the difference between playable and lagfest. The steam backup and restore means it’s easier to copy lotro from one machine to another as well.

I do still keep the original install up to date for the option of buying TP’s direct rather than having to add funds to the wallet first.

Things like achievements dont really bother me as more often than not they class breathing or walking as something amazing. But the ingame announcements that the podcast is about to start or fellowship walk stuff are handy should you be playing something else.

Upside is I can actually run both at the same time with relative ease (as long as there’s no rain ingame)

Downside is for an expansion patchday I’ve 2 clients to update

You don’t need to run the game from two separate clients, just open the game from your client, alt-tab and close the client’s popup and create a new one to log into another account. I run 4/5 at a time from the same install this way.

I use LOTRO with Steam. Easiest way to share screenshots with friends.

I started running the steam version as soon as I saw it was available. I’ve used Steam for years and it’s my number one way of keeping in touch with my gaming ‘circle’. I run all of my games through the client if I can, and have over a hundred games that use it natively.
