In this week’s recording, we had a bit of a discussion about the “Raise Your Glass” segment Merric had put together about 3 years ago and if it should be re-done. It’s the part with a clinking glass and Merric saying “Everyone please raise your glass with me”. We decided to make it a poll and let the audience decide.
Should Merric make a new "Raise Your Glass" segment for the podcast?
- I like cheese (30%, 143 Votes)
- I'm ok either way. (28%, 130 Votes)
- Yes (17%, 78 Votes)
- I don't listen to the podcast (13%, 63 Votes)

Perhaps something with wooden or metal beer steins clonking together and sloshing around rather than the champagne glasses?
Feels more fitting with the middle earth theme.

In actuality it is a drinking glass (regular glass) and a spoon we clinked against it. Not champagne glasses lol but I get your meaning. I have a pewter tankard somewhere.

I really love cheese
August 12, 2012 at 1:57 pm
I like cheese, too.
Please don’t move it.
August 12, 2012 at 11:52 am
Also, if possible, please tone down the volume of the clinking glass, because it’s a bit loud for me compared to the rest of the show.

I can understand if an author of a podcast wants to shake things up after x amount of time; I really can. If this is Merric and Goldenstar’s actual desire to change something that’s been annoying THEM for some time, then by all means… it’s YOUR podcast.
However, this seem more to be in reaction to a specific, solitary comment that some listener using headphones finds it annoying. I use headphones; I don’t have an issue. I dislike reactionary change to something that’s become a traditional part of an event simply because one person is mildly wincing.

I agree with Pickles that it wouldn’t hurt to re-record the glass clinking sound (especially since you have upgraded all your podcasting equipment since you recorded that clip).
The actual segment is apt for what you are doing on the show. Maybe it could use more crowd noise, with some gruff dwarves in the background (the joy of multitracking!).

I voted yes.
Please change the ‘town crier’ bit as well. Baby Hobbit (who I presumed is the original town crier) is too old to cry like that
If you must keep it, can you lower the volume of both ‘Town Crier’ and ‘Raise your Glass’ ? I’m listening to your podcast with a headset and it’s deafening
August 12, 2012 at 4:57 pm
Have to disagree on both counts here also.
Both those intros are great!
And the Town Crier as a crying baby is awesome! Originally I thought that had to be from some Monty Python movie, but then I learned it was Merric & Baby Hobbit and was quite impressed.
Also I’ve never had an issue with the volume. Not sure why others have.
August 13, 2012 at 8:35 am
I agree with FoxFire; indeed both of them sound great.
August 13, 2012 at 7:37 am
Yes! I don’t want to hear the baby crying anymore.
It’s grating and jarring.
August 13, 2012 at 8:11 am
We aren’t even asking about the baby crying one.

Can of worms: Opened!

That little segment often reminds me to get a drink, so no leave it in.
August 12, 2012 at 4:51 pm
No way. It’s perfect the way it is.
August 12, 2012 at 4:51 pm
Oh and P.S. I also like cheese.
August 12, 2012 at 5:01 pm
I think it is good as is but I also understand that after 3 years it may be sounding a bit ‘old’ considering all the stuff you can do now that you couldn’t back then.
Why not have a contest or something to ask listeners to write a new script for you or even produce one and you can cycle them each week.
August 12, 2012 at 7:28 pm
I actually like the old version honestly but I voted I’m okay either way since it’s your podcast
I have to agree with whoever said that if it was because some one person complained.. then don’t change it at all.. if you are bored that’s another subject altogether. I would prefer if it didn’t change but understand if you wanted to break with tradition.
August 12, 2012 at 8:26 pm
No need to fix what ain’t broken.
The podcast and blog are very popular as is.
August 12, 2012 at 9:43 pm
I’ve always liked it, no need to replace, though I had to vote for “I like cheese” for obvious reasons.
August 12, 2012 at 10:28 pm
I’ve always found the glass sound quite jarring and the intro bits sound a lot louder to me to the point that I take out my headphones when the intro pieces are about to come up.
Maybe I’ve got it all too loud but it seems fine the rest of the time.
Whatever happens I am going to be listening and I am something of a sucker for things that have something of a history (3 years is a history!) so I’d also be kinda sad to lose the original version of the intros.
Keep being awesome!
August 13, 2012 at 7:34 am
That intro is fine, but
PLEASE CHANGE THE TOWN CRIER!
I switch from the aux input to my car radio every time to avoid hearing the screaming baby.
Sometimes I forget to put it back for five minutes or so because of my short attention span.
August 13, 2012 at 9:37 am
Keep it as is.
I would agree that on headphones the high pitch of the clink isnt that pleasant so maybe redo that part with a different glass or a glass containing some liquid to lower the pitch a shade.
August 13, 2012 at 3:40 pm
I was going to say I was fine either way.
Then, there was a cheese option.
August 13, 2012 at 8:13 pm
I actually think that you should change the intro theme for one of these new Rohan tracks by Chance Thomas.
A) They’re beautiful
B) The current one blasts my eardums away, and the lyrics are… no bueno. Is it even English?
August 14, 2012 at 12:27 am
I always thought it was Frodo saying “Raise your glass with me” to salute Bilbo. It’s well done.
August 15, 2012 at 9:57 am
When I first started listening to the podcast a year or so ago, I found the clinking glass to be jarring and very loud. Now, it doesn’t bother me. I think as long as the volume can be set consistently from show to show, it’s fine. But I understand the people who want it to go. On a side note, I never knew it was Merric speaking in that clip. It always sounded to me like Star Trek Deep Space Nine’s Dr. Julian Bashir. And I love the baby hobbit cries!
August 15, 2012 at 10:08 am
I like it the way it is. I listen on headphones and it dosn’t bother me at all.
August 22, 2012 at 12:30 pm
Just lower the volume of the glass and you’ll be fine. I listen w/ headphones a lot too (like the guy mentioned in the last podcast) and the glass’ clinking is too much.
In all honesty, if you’d lower the volume on all your bumpers I’d be grateful : x Neither of you are particularly loud-mouthed, so the volume spikes in the bumpers are particularly jarring. Also, when I listen in the car they wake the baby if I don’t get to the volume controls in time…
