Dev Diary: Rune-keepers in Riders of Rohan

LOTRO News

The Developer Diary for the Rune-keeper changes coming in Riders of Rohan has been released today!  Although the changes to the class are short and sweet, I’m sure that all too soon we’ll see lightning and fire scorching across the plains of Rohan!  So let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the class!

Skills in Riders of Rohan

  • Improved Scribe’s Spark
    • Level: ?
    • Adds a “Potent” threat reducing effect
  • Improved Rune of Restoration
    • Level: ?
    • The rock will now restore power as well as morale
  • Improved Armour of (Flame/Winter/Storm)
    • Level: ?
    • Each of these will add a morale bubble in addition to their previous effects.

These skills seem to follow a current theme with the “Improved” skills of other classes: reducing threat, the ability to restore power, and morale bubbles.  I’m not complaining though since these are pretty useful effects to have!

Skill Adjustments

  • Flurry of Words
    • The evasion reduction debuff has been removed
    • Enemies will now receive a debuff that increases incoming critical chance by 3%
  • Mystifying Flame
    • The damage has been “moderately”  increased
    • The threat reduction has also been increased

The only skill I can vouch for on this one is Mystifying Flames and that’s because I know that increased damage and reduced threat is good!  (I’m clever like that.)  However, I don’t know what the removal of the evasion will mean to Flurry of Words.  Offhandedly I would think that keeping the evasion debuff would be much more beneficial than increasing the chance to crit a target, but I could be wrong.  Please let me know what you think about the changes below.

Trait Changes

  • Linnod of Peace
    • A  -10% healing threat generation bonus has been added
  • Rune of Endurance
    • Will also enhance the power restoration of Improved Rune of Restoration.

Again, I can’t really argue with the changes here.  The Rune of Endurance change only makes sense and the addition of threat reduction done by healing to Linnod of Peace is a welcome addition too.

Closing

Much like the other developer diaries there are some good, solid changes being made to the class; but nothing to go wild about either.  On the other hand, the bubble and power restoration are potentially really good changes in my opinion.  So fill me in RK’s!  What do you think about the changes coming to the class?

well, not bad. As a guardian i can see good changes here in threat reduction, there is always a rune-keepers stealing agro when you don’t specific call to not do it.

Power-restoring Rune, egads! This has been suggested on the RK community boards for the longest time, and they’ve given a host of reasons why they won’t do it; but here it is. Looking forward to how they implement that. Hopefully it won’t be useless. Also, as a mainly fire-based DPS RK, the Mystifying Flame buff seems very good indeed. MF already provides pretty decent damage for an instant cast (with fire line capstone) DoT in my opinion, and increasing that along with the threat reduction can’t hurt.

    Just my 2 coppers.

Well… I am completely underwhelmed. lol
Not to be mean, but it looks like so little thought was put into it.

The change to the Improved Armour of X is the only change that isn’t benign. They took a typically unused skill and gave it more purpose. Note though that the current design of this skill is to step one toward Neutral attunement, meaning that it will take you out of DPS/Healing Rhythm to be able to use it.

I’ll do a more lengthy dissection later. Thanks for posting it Merric.

Incoming Crit Chance is actually super awesome if the RK is grouped with a Captain or Burglar (possibly Champs?), because those classes have skills that are unlocked by critical hits. I can’t be 100% sure, but I assume that Incoming Crit Chance as a debuff allows you to exceed the 25/30% cap on outgoing crits.

Yes that, but generally more damage! I think the issue the evade debuff has is that with the introduction of Finesse a well geared DPS class will nearly always burn through most of the targets evade.

Nice solid changes. The rock giving them power is such a nice intuitive change. Anyone ever throw out the idea of a DPS rock. Maybe something along the lines of you drop near enemies and it aoe pulses a DOT. I could think of a lot of ways to expand off this too. Anyways guess I should go revisit my RK. I left him in Forochel. He must be froazen solid by now. Lols Dwarvesicle.

I like the changes. I’m glad to see Flurry of Words changed. It’s a skill a rarely used because it just seems pretty weak, damage-wise. But now the increased crit chance will make it worthwhile. I like the improved Scibe’s Spark as that’s a bread butter skill that is always used. Power regen from the pet rock is a nice addition too, although I don’t typically have power issues.
