Being in a beta is bitter-sweet. The pros are that you are helping the game you love find and squash bugs while getting a sneak peak of the goodies to come. The primary con is that on launch day, you’re pretty much out of surprises.
So this week’s question is “If you were invited to the closed beta, would you participate?”
Remember we are not asking if you have received an invite. If you have received an invite, DO NOT SHARE IT. See our NDA discussion in this post. We are only asking that given the chance, would you join the beta.
If you were invited to the closed beta, would you participate?
- Yes! (53%, 449 Votes)
- No. (27%, 227 Votes)
- Maybe (20%, 171 Votes)
- Other (Leave a Comment) (0%, 7 Votes)

I had to think a lot about this, but on the whole I decided no.
Personally, I’d like to experience Rohan when it is as fleshed out as possible(post release bugfixes exempt), and I feel many others could do a better job of bugsquashing than I could.
That said, if I were given a Beta invite, I’m not sure I could withstand the temptation to log in. :/

Nope, I would not participate. I want that “brand new” feeling when its finally released, not ok..lets do it again feeling.
As the poster said above, I would like to have it more polished, and fleshed out.
I can wait a few more months.

It took me a minute to decide, but I’d join the beta. If only to help out squashing the bugs. I’s a new experience for me, one that I’d love to have seen the career path I wish to take in the future

I’ll be so happy if I get inv:)

I always like knowing as soon as possible. I used to open my Christmas presents early. This will be no different for me.

I’ve been in many previous betas and reported bugs. But I’m more into enjoying the “live” content and like being surprised when the expansion hits the servers.
Still, I voted “no” and meant it, but were I to receive an invite, there’s always the chance I might not be able to resist…

I wouldn’t join because that would reduce the time I had to play what is already out (leveling alts, one of which I am in love with, grinding stuff at level cap so I can have an easier time grouping, etc). If I did get an invite, I might spend a few hours checking out the new content, but no more.

I play with my husband who is a much more skilled gamer than I and picked up new systems easily. But mounted combat is probably going to have a steep learning curve for me. So if I was invited to beta, that would give me a chance to get used to it before launch so I would hold him back so much. I’d definitely join if only for that reason.

I would never join a beta. Not that I don’t want to, but I really like having the contente when it is released, as a whole, and I want it to be a surprise.
Besides, being only a casual player, I doubt I can help with the beta testing and finding bugs. I think there are better players than me at this.
So I prefer to pass the chance to someone that can make a difference for all of us.

Oh… Heck YEAH!!!
July 14, 2012 at 4:33 pm
I would totally join the beta. I’ve been in a few in my lifetime, and I’ve found that I have a particular knack for breaking instances. I owe it to the world to share my gift.
July 14, 2012 at 4:50 pm
I think I would, but probably just to look around. I don’t think I’d quest or ruin too much of the experience ahead of time, but I don’t think I’d be able to resist logging in and riding around to check the place out though.
July 14, 2012 at 5:12 pm
I’d be all over it like Stink On A Monkey!!!
July 14, 2012 at 5:36 pm
Since I’m not yet at level cap I’d rather spend my limited game time in playing my toons.
July 14, 2012 at 5:49 pm
First rule of Beta: Do not talk about Beta.
July 14, 2012 at 7:42 pm
Do you need to be at level cap to participate in the beta?
July 14, 2012 at 8:06 pm
No. Typically there are ways to create an end level character to try out the end game.
July 15, 2012 at 4:17 am
Huh, good. My best character is on lvl 60 after playing it 1 and 1/2 year
July 14, 2012 at 8:33 pm
That would mostly depend on how they would handle character transfer for EU players. Last time, we couldn’t transfer ours, and it took them quite some time until they finally opened that tavern for character creation. Most of us only found that out after installing the client, because they didn’t even manage to include the fact in their congratulatory “You’ve been selected for the Beta!!!!” email, never mind that a chance at beta access had been promoted with the pre-order. The way that was handled, plus the dismissive reactions of many US players when we dared to express our unhappiness in the forums (the best were those who said we should create level 1 characters to provide server load while they tested the new content) rather put me off the whole process.

In playing LOTRO, I have come to appreciate that a large part of what I enjoy most about the game is the journey, to the point that I am reluctant to reach the destination! After 2 years, my highest level character is in the mid 40 range. All this goes to say that I would love testing the Beta if given the opportunity! I would not be too concerned about surprises being spoiled, as by the time I would get to those areas on one of my primary characters, everything would feel new again!
July 14, 2012 at 9:23 pm
I’ve beta’ed a great number of games but I don’t beta expansions for games I’m currently playing. I like beta’ing games that haven’t come into the market yet to see what the world looks like and how the battle and crafting systems are.
July 14, 2012 at 10:12 pm
I have way too many alts to ever want to go through a region more than I need to. I’ll see it when it goes live and it’ll be awesome then, just like every release day is.
July 14, 2012 at 11:45 pm
No, it would ruin the excitement of when it opens for real.
July 15, 2012 at 1:36 am
I would probably want to wait until the game went live because I generally dislike spoilers.
However, if I could participate in a beta test and prevent them from unleashing a horrifically-designed area like the Pit of Iron in the live version by spamming bug reports, it might be worth it.
July 15, 2012 at 5:15 am
No because I would be afraid the invitation e-mail was a scam trying to steal my account details.
July 15, 2012 at 10:24 am
Nope, I don’t want to ruin the surprises that awaits me when this launches.
July 15, 2012 at 11:50 am
I think I wouldn’t be able to resist having a peek, but I don’t think I’d want to play much.
July 15, 2012 at 7:29 pm
If someone don’t want to test new content, you can send me your betakey to FionArkue@gmail.com =)
July 16, 2012 at 4:38 pm
really shouldn’t publish your email like this.
July 15, 2012 at 9:47 pm
No.
I’ve done the whole beta test thing before and am just not interested anymore.
July 16, 2012 at 4:54 pm
Yes. If there’s a bug I’m likely to find it beta or not… I think it’d be fun to try and flesh them out
July 17, 2012 at 9:09 am
Normally I would jump on an invite to the beta; however, my time to play the game is sparse. I don’t even have enough time to get all the things done in the real game that I want to. I know it’s off-topic, but I really wish they would do away with LIs. It’s killed alt-ing for me.
