Mounted Combat with Aaron "Rowan" Campbell

July 3, 2012

LOTRO News

In a new YouTube video posted today, Rick “Sapience” Heaton speaks to Aaron “Rowan” Campbell concerning some of the features of mounted combat.  Within the video Rowan answers questions such as how will non-DPS classes translate into mounted combat.  He also goes into the three stances, giving us more information about how they will affect players and their skills.  Also, Rowan gives us a live demonstration on how the combat works.  Seeing this video makes me want to delve head-first into the mounted combat system and fight some wargs!

Hey, here is an idea… lets show gameplay footage from like 6 feet away on a 28inch screen and zoom in for like 10 seconds total.

Their description of Minstrel healing in mounted combat is interesting. It sounds a lot like BC spamming with an AOE component. Can’t wait to get my hands on this.

Thank goodness! I thought I was going to have to suffer through agonizing minutes of actual in-game footage to give me some limited education about what it might actually look like to play Mounted Combat! It was far more interesting to watch two aging men talk to each other; although those 10 or 15 second bursts of actual screen time were painful to endure.

From the brief(for a reason I fear) glimpses there, about the same as everybody else.
Swing at empty air and magically still scoring a hit.

Really getting a bad feeling on this. This close to release and still no real info to be had.

Mounted combat shouldn´t only introduce new mounts but also new weapons for use on horseback.
Or at least better integrate and boost the two-handed long reach ones.

I predict that as someone with no depth perception to speak of, mounted combat is going to make the game a lot harder to play for me. Sigh.

One handed gameplay? That was a source of smut in my wow guild, so wasn’t possibly the best comment.

If we still play as our class then they’re surely pushing us into the pigeonholes for the mount types that have been mentioned before this. If guards are going to be using tanking skills then that kind of forces them into the heavy horse, doesnt it?

The combat we “saw” was the cappy riding away getting hit a few times before wheeling round and one shotting the goblin. hmm.

At 4.20 they mention the warg packs like on the moors, that’s possibly ok if the majority of the buggers aren’t stealthed until you’re on 10%hp.

I hate to say it, but this video that was intended to get me excited for mounted combat has kind of done the opposite. Maybe it’ll be cooler when you’re in a fellowship, and maybe it’ll be more fun when you’re actually controlling the toon instead if watching someone else, but this video just looked … lame. Dangit! I really wanted to like this, but I am just not excited by it. I hope that subsequent videos make me feel differently. :-(

That video is awful, hopefully better ones are on the way. I want to see what my RK will do on horseback.
