Fellowship! The Musical Parody of “The Fellowship of the Ring” is a loving parody of the first Lord of the Rings movie. From a funny parody of the Galadriel intro to a balrog cabaret act to singing in Elvish this musical really has everything you could want from a parody. It will make you laugh every time you listen to it because it is just that funny.
At face value Fellowship! looks like a bunch of random people doing a funny parody. Once you listen to several songs you realize that the cast is far more talented than you expected. Frodo in particular has some amazing solos that really show off his voice. The talent becomes even clearer on “The Fellowship” and “Song of Destiny” because they put several songs that you have already heard together into epic well thought out songs that really show off the talent of the singers and the writers.
In “One Ring” it parodies the time when Frodo finds out he has the “One Ring” and somehow makes it a very funny moment. I think because Lord of the Rings is such a serious book it makes it really easy to parody because it is so serious. It continues on later with Boromir talking about the ring the whole play whenever we see him. It makes it really funny to think that Boromir is only in the Fellowhship to talk away the ring and creates some exciting moments as well. This theme finally ends in “Lament of the Ring” where Frodo and Boromir have a voice contest where they sing higher and higher and Frodo wins just because he could sing much higher. It is really funny to see Boromir trying to sing really high and straining over it because he can’t get that high. This moment also shows off just how amazingly talented Frodo is. He really stands out because Boromir is singing so badly and it creates an interesting dynamic that really lets Frodo shine.
The thing I like most about Fellowship! is that it is done by fans for fans which makes it a true parody instead of an attack or lack of respect it takes the movie and shows how silly many parts are. This makes it truely funny from a fans point of view instead of someone who has just seen the films.
Fellowship! recently finished its summer showings and will likely resume later this year if you want to see it live in California but you can also get the original cast recording off of I-Tunes or from cdbaby for only $9.99 for the whole album. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/fellowshipmusical While this is only for the songs, it is well worth the cost.
With work on a second installment, Fellowship! has a bright future ahead as long as people continue to see this amazing play.
I really can’t say enough about how funny this musical really is. Fellowship! will keep you laughing every time and really never gets old. It really shows the brilliance in the writing where it is just fun to listen to every time.

I liked the marginally-irritated-looking balrog and, let’s face it, any show featuring rubber tentacles thrown in from the wings can’t be bad!
