Announced today on LOTRO’s site is a promotion for a Premium Warsteed Mount. How it works is pretty simple, purchase any of the store exclusive mounts listed in the announcement post and you will be able to use the look on your new warsteed when Riders of Rohan launches this fall.
Steeds listed to be included in this premium warsteed appearance are:
According to QuarterMasterL in the forums the Steed of the Burglar and the Steed of the Hunter will be included in this offer as well even though it is not listed on the offer page currently.
Unfortunately the Steed of the Burglar and the Steed of the Hunter were not available in the latest Rohan build for us to take screenshots. Our development team is working hard to hook them up and we will be adding screenshots as soon as they become available.
What about the other store exclusive mounts like the Steed of Minas Ithil or the Steed of Bright Days for example?
From @LOTRO on Twitter we see that it will at least for now be limited to all the class steeds and the Steed of Night and there are no plans to offer these looks as cosmetic offerings for the warsteeds.
What about those who won a store exclusive mount in a lottery?
Twitter answers this question again stating that right now it does not grant to those who won in a lottery but it is something they are working on. It sounds like it’s their goal to have lottery winners able to use the cosmetics but the technicalities of how to make sure that happens is not settled yet.
The article also shows how we will be able to customize the appearance of the pieces so we will be able to dye the parts to craft our own unique look!
From what we’ve seen of the appearance panel from Game Front’s article, it looks like there are several areas that are customizable. So several parts with options to dye makes this an opportunity to really craft yourself a unique looking warsteed!
For those who love the idea of a unique warsteed look but purchasing horses in the LOTRO store isn’t their thing, fear not. The same Game Front article also mentioned there will be other ways to earn different looks for your horses.
You’ll also have access to a wide range of cosmetic options for your mount. Some will be purchased through the store, some will be earned through traits, and some will be crafted.
Purchasing a store mount is not required to take advantage of this system. However, just like the store exclusive mounts themselves, I’m betting if there’s a certain bridle, saddle or leg gear you like on one of the mounts than the store is probably the only place you’ll find that specific look.
I for one am super stoked to get this new system and since I do own a couple of store exclusive mounts myself, I am very eager to give all this horsey cosmeticifying a try!

I, for one, think that all steeds owned by your character should have their appearance granted for the War Steeds. I understand they want to make money, and going forward if they offer new steeds (with the exception of “sets” that they’re in the process releasing, like class steeds) then they can sever the tie between purchased and earned steeds.
Alternatively, if they want to limit steed appearances to “gold earned” and “purple earned” steeds, then I think that’s at least allowing the hard earned horses to be associated with the new content.
I don’t begrudge them a chance to earn money, but this seems like more of a money grab. I understand that there can be technical issues on making it work, but I think that’s a cop-out, honestly. Introducing a whole new area and a whole new combat mechanic was a feat as well, but they did it. Once they chose to go this route, I think they committed themselves to including all their previous works into the new area. I’d be fine with it taking time, but allowing it for purchases only already and at this point sounds very fishy to me. I’d like to hear them say “and we’ll be including previously earned horses for sure, just not sure when” so that a horse I worked hard to earn is no different than one that people just decided to purchase. I thought that was the whole mission with their F2P conversion in the first place – allowing convenience with purchases, not advantages. I’m fine with them changing things going forward, but give credit to those who already put in the work. I think that would be reasonable.

I believe they said they would look into making some cosmetics from the meta-deed mounts and maybe even the rep ones (I am not totally sure about this one.).
One reason for them to keep quiet about turning every previous horse they have released into a war-steed appearance is because it takes a lot of work making skins for up to 3 different models that are probably not the same as the one they are pulling assets off of, and then once you get all that done they would need to preferably tested in every configuration and color scheme.

what about the people that already own all the store exclusive mounts.
July 25, 2012 at 9:31 pm
Yes it is retroactive! (that’s why I’m excited about having some of the mounts already)
July 26, 2012 at 1:59 am
now i am excited too

Yay! That is the answer I was missing. Thanks Goldenstar.

Yeah I agree with Ardin & really hope we can at least use rep mounts for war-steed cosmetics. I would like to be able to use some of the festival mounts for my war-steed.

Do we know if these skins will be given for the purchased steeds retroactively? or is it only just new purchases? thanks

See answer in previous comment above.

thank you!

What about the steed of Minas Ithil? I’d like to see that, or tack inspired by that, in my cosmetic options, since I DID pay for that one.

Sorry, missed that bit of the article.

At the very least it appears that the winged referral horse is being made… so that’s neat.

Now, in stead of having to match my outfit to my mount, I can match my mount to my outfit! Can’t wait to play with this stuff!
July 26, 2012 at 4:01 am
I have to say it’s rather fun to see the horse picture… especially since it has gloom-bane armor on the champ on top (lvl 50 rift armor for champs)
July 26, 2012 at 8:22 am
The only store exclusive i have purchased is the steed of night, still a favourite steed to use, i hope i can colour the glowing effect of its saddle to be sea blue, forest green, and all other dyes, instead of having to stick with the red

It does look from the pictures that the red is the non-changable part but we will see!
July 26, 2012 at 8:31 am
one has to love new things to decorate, for this alone I cant wait.

So if I’m reading this right anyone lucky enough to have actually won a mount in a lottery wont be getting the warsteed skin?
Which means that they’ve somehow coded mounts to have 2 flags for their system one for store bought and one for lottery. This sounds a bit stupid as it would surely be easier to just tag a mount with a yes or no option for the skinning system and it wouldnt block “lucky” winners as once owned you cant buy it.
Unless they’re going to make store mounts cheaper like the 995tp jester steed and keep the 1995tp option as being mount plus skin. If so how does the referral horse fit into this setup?
July 26, 2012 at 9:58 am
Well, it does say they’re working on it… which would imply to me that whatever the problem is, it’s at least something they plan to rectify.
August 1, 2012 at 10:55 am
Like Tony said, they’re trying to correct that. There’s just something in the code that flags ownership by origin of receiving it, rather than just by plain ownership of the item. It is something they want to fix. They aren’t trying to make winners re-purchase a horse they already own. They probably can’t since the store won’t show you items you own.
Anyway, it’s how the system currently works but not how they desire it to work. I actually applaud their honesty here in telling us how the situation is.

Is that a horse with leg warmers on?
I can see horse wardrobe mania hitting everyone from ROR onwards.
October 7, 2012 at 11:20 am
Is there a Cappie mount? If so will it be a cosmetic also?
October 7, 2012 at 1:55 pm
There is not one yet but it will allow for cosmetic options when it is available. All class mounts and the steed of night will have cosmetic options available.
