Riders of Rohan Behind the Scenes Trailer & Concept Art

LOTRO News, Videos

Today Turbine has released a new video as well as some new concept art for The Riders of Rohan expansion.

The new video is the first in a series that takes you behind the scenes in the development of Riders of Rohan and highlights some of the work that went into making the live action short (released last week), as well as features gameplay footage.

The new concept art depicts various Rohirric structures that will appear in the expansion.

It looks as though Merric was right — those guys in the (totally awful) live action trailer do feature in game and have their own stories. Huh!

I’m looking forward to Rohan, and I admit, I got the Legendary edition specifically so I could run around as a pony and kick things. And it was completely worth it.

I know right, its just insane really, the actors in that are absolutely terrible.

But the camera work, direction, lighting every other aspect is spot on.

I wish the tens of thousands of dollars that went into the production of the two-minute live action feature could have been spent on developing the game, instead.

The replay value of the live action feature is considerably lower to me than an instance cluster might have been, for example.

Now, see, they should have put this video out either the same day or the day after the live action trailer. This video goes a lot farther in making me feel good about making a pre-purchase of the expansion.

To my mind, there’s 3 things they need to do to cinch this in for most people (can’t please everyone):

    1) Video dev diary on mounted combat. It’s the biggest selling point of this expansion. We need to see better footage of what’s going into it and what’s involved.

    2) New repeatable quests: Is this Snowbourne? Something else? We don’t know. Clarification, please.

    3) Group encounters. Er… what is this? Seriously. They’ve been ridiculously vague on this to the point where it’s glossed over in discussion. At a guess, I’d say we’re going to get daily group repeatables like we have in Limlight Gorge. I’m calling it here: Landscape Group Quests are making a comeback. But that’s just my guess. Looking forward to more details…the lack of clarity and attention to actual game-play footage is rather annoying. Nonetheless, I can’t wait ’till release day!

For a behind the scene video, this one really told us nothing. I know it’s only the first episode. Maybe they’ll improve as we move forward.

The biggest question I have is why would a behind the scenes video for Rohan only feature gameplay from the Great River region? I know the Rohirrim are there as well but that is not the area they’re trying to sell with this expansion.

I’m concerned that we’re less than three months away from launch and we’re only getting the tiniest bits of information from Turbine. By now, we should be inundated with promotional materials and in depth interviews.

That’s all very nice and good, but why?

Why did we (or Turbine) need this?

I think it’s neat and cool, but I would rather not have to spend an extra $20 on buying the expansion for this.

Oh I just figured out in part why. Because the community talked up Rohan like it’s the most amazing thing in all fantasy literature, and this is the moment they’ve all been waiting for! I never quite got that.

Anyhow, whatever. From what I’ve seen so far I’m not particularly impressed. Maybe once they’ve released more screen shots and information.

Meanwhile… did you see Elder Scrolls Online!!

I hate to say it, but that COULD possibly be the one MMO that would pull me away from LOTRO. Assuming Bethesda can make an MMO as engaging as their single-player games.

Well, I’ve never played an Elder Scrolls game, so I can’t speak to that.

        BUT…

If they ever make a Fallout MMO, I’m in big, big trouble.

Anyone else notice that the horse has the same dappled colouration as the combe one?
