Curse’s Rohan Interview

June 11, 2012

Events, LOTRO News, Videos

Recently Curse set down with the Turbine devs and were nice enough to leave the door open to let us watch the interview.  This interview goes more in-depth into the story of Riders of Rohan.  It also gives us some details as to what that exclusive content for the Legendary edition is and where we can expect to end up at the end.  All in all it was another good look into Rohan and I have to say I am starting to get excited about this expansion because of all these video interviews.

Also if you look closely you can see what I think is Fangorn on the video screen in the background.

Hope you all enjoy this look into Rohan.

Hmmmm… I seem to remember that they said they would never have flying mounts – here she didn’t quite dismiss the idea completely. :(

Other than nazgul were there really any times in the books where people rode on a flying beast, with the exception of gandalf.

I always saw the eagles swooping down and grabbing the hobbits in a claw instead of being saddled up beforehand.

On the bright side if it does come it’ll be an extra paid for thing that I’ll be less likely to get suckered into buying unlike this “expansion”

There have been several instances where characers in the books rode on Eagles. Gandalf for one, but Bilbo and Frodo and Samwise and the dwarves of Thorin’s company have also ridden upon the eagles. In the Silmarillion I believe Tuor and his brother rode the eagles when leaving the hidden city of Gondolin.

The eagles do intervene in a number of other rescues (in the Silmarillion). However, they are never used regularly as steeds; they only swoop into the most dire situations. They serve the Vala Manwë, not men, elves, or wizards. When they show up, it’s to fulfill the will of the Valar, not to save someone a walk.

I think fell-beasts are the only other flying mounts. Unless someone has ridden a balrog ;)

Yeah there really is absolutely no reason to have a flying mount from a lore perspective in LotRO and also Balrogs can’t fly (listen to Tolkien Proff if you don’t belive me) and are free agents.

Intervention is the key word. There are incidents of people flying on or being carried by eagles but its not common enough to be considered an option for a mount.

The eagles came to the rescue in set situations rather than being used as a mount to flap about from a to b.

Flying mounts would take a pretty big amount of development time as they’d have to either lock parts of the world off from flying mounts or rework the normally inaccesible areas. Going by current pricing they’d be out of most peoples reasonable price range.

Lots of good information in that, making me slightly less cranky, but still disinclined to plunk down $70 sight unseen.

Welp, I bit the bullet and bought both the Legendary Edition as well as the Steam Starter pack this week. In for a penny, in for a pound.
