Spring Festival is running this year from May 24 – June 11, 2012 . This guide is here to help you find all the events available.
The currency of this festival is the Spring Leaf. Collecting these can help you buy the goodies listed in the rewards section below. The quests are mostly broken up into five major regions in Middle Earth. These are where you will find the festival vendors as well as other festival activities.
- Bree Festival Grounds (24.7S, 51.6W Breeland)
- Thorin’s Hall (13.48S, 103.2W Thorin’s Gate) – in the underground Tavern
- Duillond (24.6S, 93.1W Ered Luin)
- Shire Party Tree (29.85S, 71.48W Shire)
What is not included in this guide The festivals of Middle Earth include certain quests that appear with each and every festival. Please see our guide on these General Festival Quests for help with those events. This would include the

Quests
Flower Quests
Starter quest arrives in the mail called “When the Rare Flowers Bloom” and instructs you to go speak with Avery Crabapple in Bree near the boar fountain. If you have never done them before there is a chain before you get to the repeatable “A Fist Full of Flowers” quest.
This event works similar to the anniversary festival in that there is a daily consumable item you have to pick up to do the quest. For this festival, you pick up a ticket from Gredlan Mugwort standing next to Avery in Bree and then turn to talk to Avery to pick up the repeatable flower quest. A ticket is only required for this repeatable quest; not the pre-requisite quests.
Love is Like a Flower
Quest Giver: Avery Crabapple (in Bree-town by the Boar Fountain)
Quest Level: 6+
Rewards: 90 copper
Repeat: No
Collect one Marigold, Violet and Primrose. Marigolds are found primarily outside Michel Delving. Violets are outside Breetown near the stone circle. Primroses are outside Celondim in Ered Luin.
A-courting Bree Will Go
Quest Giver: Avery Crabapple (in Bree-town by the Boar Fountain)
Quest Level: 10+
Rewards: 42 copper
Repeat: No
Talk to Barliman Butterbur and place a bouquet of flowers at a house in Bree-town (30.1S, 52.1W)
A Fern By Any Other Name….
Quest Giver: Avery Crabapple (in Bree-town by the Boar Fountain)
Quest Level: 6+
Rewards: 42 copper
Repeat: No
Collect the bouquet you left at the wrong door and ask Fern Coppersmith (30.2S 52.0W) for the correct address. Collect the sweets from the alley behind Avery and give them to him.
A Fist Full of Flowers
Quest Giver: Avery Crabapple (in Bree-town by the Boar Fountain)
Quest Level: 10+
Rewards: Gift Box
Repeat: Daily
Collect as many flowers from “Patch of Flowers” as you can in 1 hour. Turn them into Gredlan Mugwort in Bree-town (30.3S, 51.2W) near Avery for a red, blue or green gift box.
- Marigolds are found primarily outside Michel Delving in the Shire.
- Violets are outside Breetown near the stone circle.
- Primroses are outside Celondim in Ered Luin.
Note that to receive a gift box, you need 6 of each type of flower. Keep that in mind before you have the grand idea of only picking flowers in one location.
Your quest tracker will show you the area to search for the flowers and the areas are quite large. All flowers have a chance of being picked up from a patch of flowers but the locations listed above is the primary locale to pick them in larger quantities. The good news is the flowers count as tokens and go in your barter wallet rather than your inventory (this may be because I purchased the premium wallet).
If you want to continue to repeat this quest without waiting until the next day, you’ll have to buy another Ticket from the store (for 100 TP). It works a bit similarly to buying more picks during the Treasure-Hunt or Badges from the anniversary festival. You’re just buying a chance to pick up more flowers for gift boxes.
PRO TIP:
The delete key is default mapped to target items near you. The easiest way to find flowers is to run around tapping your delete key and waiting for a Patch of Flowers to be targeted.
For added assistance locating the flowers you have targeted, go to your options > combat options and turn on Directional Selection Indicator. This will place a small dotted line at your feet that points to the location of your target.
The boxes will largely contain fun items such as dyes, wall paint, tart recipes or cosmetics. One thing Ketani did notice is that blue dyes and paints were coming from blue boxes, pinks and reds from red boxes, etc. It may be coincidence but it seems to be a theme. This thread on the forums has folks reporting the items they’ve collected from the gift boxes.
The big prize from the flower gift boxes is a new steed, Steed of the Jester! This is a 68% speed 250 morale steed that jingles as you ride it. It has been reported as dropping for each color of gift box so it is just a random gift box reward.
Bree-land Hedge Maze
The hedge maze is east of the Bree Festival Grounds just past the horse race track.
Great map of the Festival Hedge Maze is available over at The Brasse. It should be a big help in completing the quests although it does not have the two quests that were added in 2011 shown. Don’t worry, the quests are simple enough to not have to find a specific spot on the map. Just seeing the layout will help.
The maze allows the use of speed buffs! For those not a hunter a speed boost could be obtained in several different fashions including but not limited to: Harbringer’s Cloak from Mirkwood Adventurer’s Pack, crafted jewelry that grants speed buff such as the Fine Agate Necklace of Quickness , VIPs can purchase boosts with destiny points and there are the run speed boosts in the LOTRO Store.
The quests do not require a speed boost to finish them so don’t feel like you need one. I was able to do them all on my regular speed minstrel.
Misplaced Companions
Quest Giver: Saelthalel (24.75S, 50.87W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
Six of Saelthalel’s friends are lost in the hedgemaze and she wants you to find them!
A Laugh at the Lost
Quest Giver: Gísi
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
This trickster dwarf wants you to hang up fake directions signs to keep the people in the maze lost a bit longer.
The Chicken Dash
Quest Giver: Buttercup North-took (24.78S, 50.88W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
There are loose chickens inside the maze that Buttercup wants you to catch before they escape. This quest is only available approximately every 45 minutes. A broadcast about chickens being loose is sent to the entire Bree-land area. That is the signal that this quest is available.
The Cloven Track
Quest Giver: Gil Plover (24.79S, 50.85W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: No
You are challenged to make it through the maze in under 15 minutes.
A Speedy Errand
Quest Giver: Gil Plover (24.79S, 50.85W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: No
Same objective as above to get through the maze in under 10 minutes.
A Fool’s Errand
Quest Giver: Gil Plover (24.79S, 50.85W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
Same objective as above to get through the maze in under 3 minutes. This one becomes your repeatable daily quest.
The Green Challenge
Quest Giver: Tob Sandyman (24.80S, 50.86W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: +700 with the Inn League
Selectable Rewards: Spring Leaf (x2), Inn League Sinister Keg
Repeat: Daily
This quest giver will only speak with you if you are a member of the Inn League! This one can get tricky because after finding the artifact requested you are slowed and are given 3 minutes to find the exit before ported away (as the Sinister Keg is known to do). This still puts a speed debuff on as part of it’s quest and will remove any speed increase you add such as hunter speed buffs. I did test this with my Harbringer’s Clock and after turning it in the Harbringer’s Cloak buff did return so it didn’t waste using your speed run items.
Terrible Tweens
Quest Giver: Emma Greenbush (24.8S, 50.8W)
Quest Level: 10+
Rewards: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
Tweens are younger hobbits (normal hobbit size NPCs) running about shouting and generally disrupting normal maze activities. They tend to spawn in a dead end of the maze and run to another dead end where they de-spawn. Rings will appear on the mini-map for their location. There are many of them and you only need to catch 4. There is no timer. Just grab one as you find it.
Disorientation
Quest Giver: Birdie Thornthicket (24.8S, 50.8W)
Quest Level: 10+
Rewards: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
You have 10 minutes to find and drink 6 dire brews that are scattered across the maze. These are simple mugs of beer that spawn at random points in the maze. Almost like an easter egg hunt. There’s a twist though. Dire brews are strong and will cause you to pass out and wake up in a random portion of the maze.
Duillond Stomp-A-Shrew
Entrance to the shrew stomping ground is behind the gazebo where the dance lessons happen inside a cave (24.7S, 93.2W).
Inside you’ll find an arena type area where probably there are a bunch of people running around frantically if a game is going on. There are several levels of the shrew game you can play, each one just a bit more difficult than the last. You can chose one pesky shrew type (leisurely, practiced or challenge) and the enormous shrew quest before the round begins. Each round last 3 minutes with 5 minutes between games.
Stomp-a-shrew for the Leisurely Gardner
Quest Giver: Maengamiel (Leisurely Gardner)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 1 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Can participate in each game session.
Drive away pesky shrews (10). There is no need to kill all 10 of the shrews in one round. You can take it easy and stomp a few here and there and finish in however many turns it takes.
Stomp-a-shrew for the Practiced Gardner
Quest Giver: Brangloth (Practiced Gardner)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Can participate in each game session.
Drive away pesky shrews (10). Must complete this task within one round.
The Stomp-a-Shrew Challenge
Quest Giver: Logethuil (Elite Gardner)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 5 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Can participate in each game session.
Drive away pesky shrews (10), Plant seedlings in the soil (5) Must complete these tasks within one round.
Stomp-a-shrew — An enormous shrew
Quest Giver: Dinedhrin (Infuriated Gardner)
Quest Level:10+
Reward: 5 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Can participate in each game session.
Use the Enormous Boots to stop the Enormous Shrew (Only one of these spawn per round, so only one player can accomplish this per round.)
After accepting your quest, you need to go pick up your Boots of Quite-Imaginable Power from nearby crates. You must pick up the quest/boots each time. You do not have to put them on your feet but you will need to put them in your action bar so you can use them. When the game starts you must target and stomp nearby shrews for credit . For the challenge you will also need to plant the seedlings while stomping shrews to oblivion.
A Shortage of Boots
Quest Giver:
Santmereth (Worried Gardener)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
First run of this quest you’ll need to visit Deluraw in Duillon (near the ovens) to get 3 sub-quests to collect flax plants, twine from the Celodim docks and cherry wood branches. On the repeat of this quest, there are no sub-quests, you just go out and collect the same 3 items.
How the Shire Shoos Shrews
Quest Giver: Bodo Burrows (Know-it-all)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
This quest leads you back to the farms of the Shire to get advice from expert Shire farmers on the best way to remove pesky shrews. Visit Cotton Farm, Sandson’s Farm and Samwise’s old Gaffer on Backshot Row. Be sure to read the text from the Hobbits
A Proper Festival
Quest Giver: Forlad (Annoyed Gardener)
Quest Level: 10+
Reward: 2 Spring Leaf
Repeat: Daily
Forlad is annoyed that all there seems to be to this festival is stomping shrews and requests you go collect followers for the stomping ground flower pots. The flowers can be found outside the shrew stomping area near Duillond. Once collected, return to the shrew stomping grounds to place them in the flower pots.
The Shire Bullroarer Celebrations
Most of the Shire quests are one time only quests. Meaning if you did it last year, you won’t get the quest again this year. Only repeatable open is the Bullroarer fence running challenge.
A Hobbit Among the Hedges
Quest Giver: Sorrel North-Took (29.84S, 71.55W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: None
Repeat: No
This quest is simply to move you towards Bree for the Hedge maze. You will not get this quest if you’ve already been to Bree and done these quests.
A Celebration at the Greenfields
Quest Giver: Sorrel North-Took (29.84S, 71.55W)
Quest Level: 1+
Rewards: 1 Spring Leaf, 42 copper
Repeat: No
Quest has you go visit Sigismond North-Took in Brokenborings
Bullroarer’s Brew
Quest Giver: Sigismond North-took (27.23S, 67.71W)
Quest Level: 6+
Rewards: 90 copper
Repeat: No
You are asked to go pick the needed clover so more Bullroarer’s Brew can be made for the celebration. Head north into the Greenfields and look for glowy patches of clover on the ground. Creatures around this area are level 11-13 so fairly safe for most.
Paying Your Respects
Quest Giver: Sigismond North-took (27.23S, 67.71W)
Quest Level: 6+
Rewards: 90 copper
Repeat: No
You are sent to the deliver the clover to the Golden Perch in Stock. You take it to Gunderic Grubb(31.98S 63.79W) and instructed to return to Brockenborings to place a tankard of ale near Bullroarer’s statue (just return to Sigismond). After placing your brew and talking to Sigismond again you’re instructed to go visit Tobias Brockhouse (27.24S, 67.25W) east of Brockenborings. He’s standing on a little stage.
Bullroarer’s Challenge
Quest Giver: Tobias Brockhouse (27.24S, 67.25W)
Quest Level: 6+
Rewards: 90 copper, 5 pints of Bullroarers Brew
Selectable Rewards: Wooden Keg, Bullroarer’s Tankard, Clover Patch, Greenfields Hat, Bullroarer’s Brew (x5)
Repeat: Daily
Behind the stage where Tobias stands you’ll notice a thin fencing. You are instructed to toast to Bandobras’s Health with the mugs near by and then walk the length of the fence without falling off. Don’t sweat it if you fall off as you can try again in about 20 seconds. You receive your rewards from back at Sigismond (not Tobias).
Also if you’re curious as to what the Greenfields Hat looks like, Sigismond is wearing one. The clover patch looks exactly like the patches you picked up off the ground. I went with the tankard myself! There is also the “Bullroarer’s Challenge – Advanced” quest which is the same except you must cross the fence in under 20 seconds! The rewards for this version are a choice of Inn League Kegor Bullroarer’s Brew (x10).
Thorin’s Hall
While still a big hub of Ale Association quests, I found nothing specific to Spring Festival here other than the dance quest.
Festival Mounts
This event operates the same way as all other festival horse races. If you are new to the festival horse races you can read our General Festival Guide for the run down on this event.
The race quest rewards one of the following: 1 spring race token -or- 3 spring tokens. It is repeatable daily for both the Bree and Shire locations.

Thanks for the Great guide. Will share this with my kin

Wow, the gift box horse is GORGEOUS. Must have it! *Rushes off to play.*
May 25, 2012 at 2:48 am
I hate these ‘random-luck-horses’ =(
On festival I got EVERY Postmaster-token with my main and never found this duskmarchen horse… On last day I had to use this raid-cheat to get it (collector =((()… This times, a raid doensn’t help to longer the 1 hour
And THIS horse is really beautifull..
May 25, 2012 at 3:23 am
Last year’s Spring Dandy Cloaks got hooded after update 2 and never got repaired. I am sorry for the leaves I spent back then since clearly this will not be corrected so I’ll just have to buy it again. A pitty!
June 3, 2012 at 1:24 am
+1 =(
May 25, 2012 at 4:27 am
Is the only consumable emote they removed this year the Essence of Toad?
May 25, 2012 at 11:59 am
That I believe is a summer fest consumable…
May 25, 2012 at 4:52 am
Thanks for the great guide again Goldenstar!
I must say that I already hate the repeatable for the boxes because it takes a full hour!! At least the lost invitations quest was speedy and I could run it every day on all my characters. That will be impossible for this flower quest. The boxes are tradeable so whatever boxes I manage to get will be sent to one selected character that I hope will find the Jester Steed.
I also noticed when I did the speed run through the Maze that I never got the first two quests (Cloven Track & Speedy Errand) but was immediately given the daily repeatable (A Fool’s Errand). Could this be because I already did the first two last year?
May 25, 2012 at 6:12 am
Yes the pre-requisite quests for the maze races are only done once ever. If you did them before you’ll just have the daily open.
May 25, 2012 at 8:11 am
You don’t have to spend the whole hour collecting flowers. You just have an hour to get as many as you can. There is no fail condition if you don’t do it for the whole hour.
May 30, 2012 at 2:41 am
Why does the quest say “collect as many flowers as you can” if one only needs 6 flowers of each type to get a gift box? Will I receive more boxes for more flowers?
May 30, 2012 at 6:10 am
you can obtain as many boxes as you like with the number of flowers you get in the 1 hour timer. The 6 flowers of each type is a reminder to visit all the areas, not just stay in one spot for an hour as you need ALL types of flowers to obtain a box.
May 31, 2012 at 9:42 am
Thank you!
May 25, 2012 at 5:30 am
The Jester stedd is gorgeous, though the bells may drive you crazy after awhile.
May 25, 2012 at 6:19 am
The race quest rewards one of the following: 1 anniversary race token -or- .1 anniversary tokens. It is repeatable daily for both the Bree and Shire locations.
There is mall error in copying from anniversary guide. Race gives as reward either 1 race token, or 3 spring leaves.
May 25, 2012 at 6:38 am
Yup you’re right. Thank you!
May 25, 2012 at 8:33 am
Not so keen on this random horse for looks, might just be down to the reddy orange colours again. To me those are more autumnal colours and spring is more the greeny side of things.
Presume the flower gathering is an hour from when you take the quest rather than set server based cycle like the beer fights.
May 25, 2012 at 10:07 am
Yay, I love festivals! (until I go crazy on one and burn myself out quickly, which I’m sure others end up doing sometimes…yeh, I’m talking to you, Fall Festival)
It’s pretty cool that they seem to be going with Simbelmyne-titled items for some of the new stuff, which is apparently a white flower that grows in Rohan.
May 25, 2012 at 6:26 pm
I don’t have the premium wallet and flowers went into my inventory.
May 26, 2012 at 1:54 am
Is the Spring Sprung deed still in game? Its not showing up for me.
May 26, 2012 at 9:43 am
You probably have not done “The Green Challenge” quest which requires you to be an Inn League Member.
June 3, 2012 at 5:05 pm
Don’t forget to do the Chicken Run as well – that’s what I’d missed!
May 26, 2012 at 4:19 am
I may have missed reading about this, but I ran into a game of tag near the hedge maze at the Horsefields. At 25.5S and 50.9W there’s a beacon that you can light to join the game. Just bump into other players to tag them. Does anyone know if it is festival related? I couldn’t find any quests associated with it.
Kind regards,
Bawa of Nuin Giliath

May 26, 2012 at 6:09 am
right, so I just googled it
and it’s a year-round happening that has just escaped me so far. Seems fun though!
May 26, 2012 at 7:46 am
Thank you for the festival info.
Is it just me, or are barter prices for festival items getting higher? Thank goodness I have a wardrobe for the cosmetics, but getting the horse on multiple alts will be painful.
May 26, 2012 at 10:49 am
Just found another map of the Bree maze with more information for the other quests here:
http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?257737-Spring-Festival-Maze-Map-%28spoiler-alert%29
Interestingly they he got the location of the confusing sign that The Brasse map is completely missing slightly wrong too!
May 26, 2012 at 11:00 am
Protip: The tickets are UNBOUND, as are the boxes. If you want to pass some off to your kinnies because you have what you want, or try selling them, there’s nothing to stop you
May 26, 2012 at 12:08 pm
An Enormous Shrew: Someone else stomped the shrew and I did, indeed, fail the quest… there doesn’t seem to be a second chance. Anyone else experience this?
May 26, 2012 at 2:28 pm
There is only one enormous shrew per round. If you miss it, don’t fret you can pick up the quest again and try again next round.
May 27, 2012 at 11:41 am
I knew that… just wanted to point out that I did fail the quest because in the guide, it’s written “Will not fail this quest if not done in one round. Can keep it in your log until you actually find and kill that big bugger of a shrew.”
May 30, 2012 at 4:43 pm
Yes this part of the guide is incorrect – you do fail the quest and it automatically disappears from your log if another player stomps the enormous shrew before you do. But you can then pick up the quest again at the start of the next round.
May 26, 2012 at 12:42 pm
I’m a little confused about the maze quests. Your guide lists several daily repeatable quests, but after I did the sign-post and find the elves quests the first day, there have been no rings over those npcs since then. The chickens npc has no quest for me either. My only options are Gil Plover and the drinking quest each day. What am I missing?
May 26, 2012 at 2:29 pm
The quests are dailies (I’ve done them daily myself) so I’m not sure what the issue is. The quests are reset daily around 3am I think it is. The Chicken Quest is only active every 45 min or so. It is not always available.
May 30, 2012 at 4:41 pm
I’ve noticed that on a ‘fresh’ day where I haven’t done any of the maze quests, there will be a ring above every NPC’s head. HOWEVER, depending on the quest you pick up, some of the rings may then disappear, but rest assured once you complete/cancel that quest you’ve picked up, the other quests will then be open again. So basically, you can’t do all the quests in one go (it wouldn’t be physically possible anyway due to their nature), but you will be able to if you run the maze several times in a day, completing one or two of the quests on each occasion.
May 26, 2012 at 1:45 pm
I cannot find the Blue Roan Steed in the store.
May 26, 2012 at 2:35 pm
It is still a store exclusive even if it isn’t currently in the store. They have removed the option of earning it through the festival starting this year.
You are correct though. I see Yule, Harvestmath and Summer steeds in the store. Pretty much all but spring seems to be available.
May 26, 2012 at 7:48 pm
Good guide as always.
I like your dressing room with the plain background – how do you do that? I tried that BDRX one, and although it’s good, it fills the ENTIRE screen, so you can only try on one item at a time because you have to close it to click on the windows behind it.
Oh… I did notice when I did the race earlier that you get offered one race token or three leaves. Your guide says one leaf so you might want to update that
May 30, 2012 at 12:18 pm
I use the BDRX skin open up the cosmetic preview and drag the window all the way to the right side of my monitor leaving a little room on the right for me to manipulate the store offerings and see more items.
To get the blank background I go into first person view and point the camera to the sky. The blue background you see is just the blue middle-earthian sky. You’ll notice some have stars (it was night time)
Thanks for the correction as well.
May 27, 2012 at 9:43 am
Great guide, as always!
Here are a few of my tips that help with festivals and in general:
General:
The default key for walk mode is Insert, I remap this to SHIFT+INSERT
The default key for Use is U, I add INSERT
Follow: find an unused quickslot in keymapping (I used bar 5 slot 61) and map END to it, then type “/shortcut 61 /follow” Now you have Ins Del and End (together on most keyboards) for select nearest item, follow if needed and use. This makes it easy to use items you are standing in front of like Doors, ore nodes, brews for IL/AA Pub Crawls, flowers, etc. For nodes you aren’t close to, use DEL/Target until you find one then END/Follow, then INS/Use. This works for the boot quest wood/flax and also for tradeskill ore/wood/urns.
If your mouse has extra buttons, map button 3 or 4 to Dismount/Remount
The revised quest style of “A Fist Full of Flowers” (“Lost Invitations” “Treasure-Hunt”) is time limited by the badges/picks/tickets. If you only have a few minutes one day, pick up the initial quest, get the [ticket] but DON’T turn it in yet. The [tickets] stack and you can keep getting them daily to use all at once when you have the time to run the full quest.
May 31, 2012 at 9:50 am
Thank you for the AWESOME guide!
May 31, 2012 at 10:41 pm
I’m not so much of a fan of the Spring festival. I think it’s mostly because the two big ticket items, the Hedge maze and stomping the shrews, make me ill. I get very motion sick when playing things like FPS, and apparently running around in the maze and the like does the same…sad face.

It’s the ‘Bullroarer’s Advanced Challenge’ that puts me off this festival.
Almost impossible – though I did do it once, first time it came out. Evil, evil, evil.

I’m loving this festival -) The flowers quests and gift boxes are very well thought out – bravo to Turbine!
