Outside LOTRO: LOTR Project

Outside LOTRO

Aethalwulf of Landroval has once again sent in a very interesting Outside LOTRO topic. The LOTR Project is an online mapping out of the family trees.

LOTR Project

From the site:

The Lord of the Rings Project is a project and initiative started by Emil Johansson. It is an attempt to place every character in J.R.R Tolkien’s fictional universe in a family tree. With time, the project will expand to include other things.

It takes a bit to load (which is understandable as there are a LOT of characters in The Lord of the Rings. I find it very interesting to see it all listed out. You can view just the family tree based on race as well.

This is very ambitious and still has a way to go but is really cool to finally see the complete lineage of LotR.

While I appreciate and respect the massive effort this person put into this, one needs to be careful about taking this chart as fact. I have a friend who is a Tolkien scholar (Douglas Kane, he wrote Arda Reconstructed) and he had this to say about this tree:

“It is an impressively massive undertaking, but there are a lot of mistakes, and weird compromises between different versions of stories. For instance, he lists Gil-Galad as the son of Orodreth, which is consistent with the final version that Tolkien considered, but in that version, Orodreth himself is a grandson of Finarfin, not his son, as this chart lists. Some characters that are from older versions that pretty clearly no longer existed are included, and others are not. Some of Fingolfin and Finarfin’s missing sisters are included, but some are not, etc. Still a massive undertaking and I give him credit for trying.”
