Ever since the Steel-bound Loot-boxes started appearing in game, I’ve been watching carefully to see if anyone would find the Marrow Painted Steed that was listed as being a possible reward in the boxes. One of the patch notes from the Update 5.2 patch earlier this week stated that loot boxes were being updated to have a better chance at dropping loot box only items and from my experience this seems to be an accurate statement. I’ve found several jewelry pieces and an interesting axe. However, I haven’t had any luck finding a Marrow Painted Steed. Essendon of Elendilmir was able to find this rare steed, and after they mentioned their lucky find in GLFF, they graciously allowed me to post some pictures of their new horse!
The stats on this horse are +68% run speed and 250 morale, making it comparable to store exclusive mounts and special meta deed and event mounts.

Another one?
I guess the mounts are selling really, really well.
Maybe enough to support the Hobbit expansion ;P

This mount is not for sale (or not for direct sale anyway). It is a random drop from the steel-bound lootboxes that drop in game. Technically you could pay for a key to open it but keys do drop in game as well.

I used to think the green one was ugly but this one is so far beyond ugly that I am having trouble thinking of the right word for it aside from hideous.

I actually like this one more than the green one but I still think the original with the white paint looks the best of the three.

I was talking in kinchat just now about what the horse might look like. Decided to pop on CSTM to see if a picture had been posted yet. I think hideous pretty much sums up how this horse looks. Yuck.
They couldnt’ come up with a better looking steed??

thanks ketani for the news/pics. this will have to be the second ugliest mount i see in lotro, the first one being the mount of the bright days (bling for middle earth).
on a related note, it seems to me the new standard is +68% run speed for the mounts, as they are now becoming more and more available. i’m feeling an update to speed in the near future (apart from mounted combat).

I’m kind of hoping they offer some sort of mount skill that makes ALL of your mounts as fast as the fastest one you own (maybe barring the upcoming warhorse, since I know nothing about it). I hardly ever whip out my 62% mounts now that I have a couple 68%ers.
February 15, 2012 at 8:23 pm
I actually like this idea. They could even do this on a per mount basis if they wanted to monetize it (even though I am not a big fan of the store).
February 16, 2012 at 1:52 am
that would be a neat idea, i’d like my thorin’s goat to be 68% as it’s still one of the most awesome looking goats in the game imo.

Too bad it’s not a new pattern of some sort… Three horses with bone patterns feels like too much. I might have been open to a black horse with orange paint, but I’m just not sure of this one lol
Still, congrats to Essendon! That’s a very rare find, I imagine he’s in a very small group.
February 15, 2012 at 9:56 am
Congrats! But it’s going to be really difficult to find a matching outfit, unless you borrow it from the haunted burrow skeleton hobbit.

Cool looking horse.. would love to have it for my main.. but i’ve YET to see a box drop EVER
February 15, 2012 at 8:19 pm
They do drop. I actually got 1 last week out in the marsh behind Staddle. This was before the rect patch that was supposed to increase the drop rates. No key drop yet for me though and I won’t be buying a key from the store.
February 15, 2012 at 11:32 am
Do these things drop anywhere at any time? I’m curious if there’s a higher chance to get them in instances or at certain levels. Perhaps no one knows.
February 15, 2012 at 11:49 am
These only come out of the steel-bound lootboxes that drop randomly throughout the world. It’s possible that they only drop off the higher level loot boxes but I have absolutely no idea if that is true.
February 15, 2012 at 11:51 am
They aren’t limited to high-level loot boxes. The character in the pictures I posted was level 12.
February 15, 2012 at 12:08 pm
Cool!
February 16, 2012 at 5:26 am
I just got mine off a level 20 lock box this morning. Best 100 TP I have ever spent.
February 15, 2012 at 1:00 pm
I just had a box drop for me in Dunland last night while doing normal everyday quests. Hopefully a key will drop by the time I get to 75, I don’t want to buy one from the store.
February 15, 2012 at 1:02 pm
You may want to check the AH for a key. I’ve seen several of them posted on Elendilmir today, maybe your server will be the same. Good luck whenever you open your loot box!
February 15, 2012 at 3:08 pm
wow… such a lack of creativity… pick a color.. any color.. and paste into an already existing skin.. of which there are two color varieties in game already. pffft.
February 15, 2012 at 10:23 pm
I keep hearing about these loot boxes, but I don’t know anything about them other than that they exist – what are they and where do they appear?
February 15, 2012 at 10:39 pm
Click the link in the post in the first sentence and there’s a post about the lootboxes.

While am of one of those “Everyday should be Halloween!” people, I dig this horse, but understand how it may not be everyone’s cuppa.
However, I think they are on to something here, as there are many of the existing mounts that have great tack but might look even better in a different color scheme.
February 16, 2012 at 2:03 am
the most awesome thing that could be made rideable (as long as we’re riding goats as a common thing now) would be the evil druggavar. these things look so amazing, and i’d love to see my dwarf, heavy wearing, all-black, riding through dunland on a druggavar. would feel a bit like peter fonda in easy rider i guess
February 16, 2012 at 9:34 am
*cracks up
yah, that would be awesome
I dont have a prob with the horse per se, but I think for such a rare beast a little more creativity could have been done with it to make it stand out more and be a prize.
February 16, 2012 at 1:09 pm
This mount is way too cool. I want one so bad!
February 18, 2012 at 11:18 am
Really? red skeleton steed now? first you made white one store-bought (for a brief period of time, but it killed prestige of having one). Then u made green skeleton steed only available in lotro-store. OK fine, i still have my white one. Then u release lootboxes that drop a red one??
At least make my white one +68% and 250hp like the others. itd really give me an incentive to ride taht one proudly. As is i already have like 5-6 mounts with +68% speed but none look as nice as the white skeleton horse.
In addition, turbine re-released green and white for a bundle in lotro store….The day i found my white horse in the haunted burrow was one of the happiest in my time of playing lotro. (really sick horse
) But now i see people all over riding green, and white seems most common now. Red will now have all the prestige and white will basically be “pfft. my alts all have one” type horse. At least make White one +68% and 250hp so i can ride it in moors/high level content….
