In case you were not aware, the Buried Treasure event is currently live on the LOTRO servers. You can find special stable masters in the starter cities that will take you straight to the treasure camp. I will not go over what you will find at the event as we will have a guide ready as soon as possible.
I do want to share with you a picture of my brand new Treasure-laden pony that I found at the buried treasure event. She’s pretty and she tosses coins when she runs. 68% speed and 250 morale. Kinda makes me wish I had brought an alt who didn’t already own a fast pony but Goldenstar likes horses anyway so it works out.
Enjoy the pictures and head out to try the event for yourself. We don’t have an end date but according to a response on LOTRO’s twitter account it is at least a couple days.

You mean you didn’t win two in the lotteries?
February 16, 2012 at 3:03 am
Not yet! hehehehe

Congrats!
I uncovered half a dozen Huge caches before I finally got the Treasure-Laden Goat. I also earned enough tokens to get all the emotes from the barter vendor, and won the Counterfeit emote. I think all I need is the Coin Flip emote (a drop?).
I’m going to work on getting the Trained Cave Claw Tomorrow. Still not sure if I want the Golden Mask, Helm, or Pack, but if the event goes on long enough, I might get them just for bragging rights, especially if I earn enough tokens while hoping for the other 2 mounts.

how do you manage to always pull that off?
Spent all day in the gold fields, I’m thinkin them dorfs has salted th’ mines!

congratz goldenstar!
and now, just to annpy everyone:
(goat, beautiful horse, ugly as sin horse), all have +68% run speed and 250 morale, which i think are still the best stats in game.
i was in the event last night for about 1 hour, then again for 2 hours or so before i finally went to bed.
what i got:
3 emotes (counterfeit, gem inspector and the one where you hang a jewel by a rope to probe the dig site, i forget the name now)
2 cosmetic backpacks, i also don’t remember the name (one is treasure hunter’s i think and the other is the gold bag)
3 mounts
what i hope to get before this is over:
the golden mask – i love that and it would go great with my outfit
maybe the nice cosmetic pocket, but i’m not too sure about that being already a rune keeper.
i have to say, this event is more fun than i thought
good luck, treasure hunters!

I spent a few minutes treasure hunting and promptly logged off when about 30 tokens worth of Cave Claws ended up being wasted because the “Round Ended” as they were running to their dig site and I never got a chance to dig at it before they disappeared. I can’t believe they didn’t realize this would happen.

Woohooo what a nice pony! Congrats on the lucky dig! /cheer

Played treasure hunt event for over 12 hours today. Got all the emotes and the cave claw yard decorations.
I did not get any mounts until the 4th Huge Treasure. Logged on at 4am after waking up with a severe toothache, decided I’ll do 1 more run to see what I get. Got my 4th Huge treasure. A Jackpot Goat. When I went to use the item, it said I already had a goat!!! So I checked my mounts panel and not only did I have the goat, but the treasure-laden horse too!!!!!!!
Guess they auto added instead of having me click something in my inventory. Very strange
February 14, 2012 at 6:56 am
yes, the mounts are auto-add. you will never get an inventory item for them.

I spent a few hours yesterday and a few this morning. The best I could find were the large lock boxes. The stupid cave crawlers kept finding small loot locations
.

I got the cave claw horse on my hunter. I actually like it better than the skeleton horse so this will be my “Halloween” horse from now on. He even comes with his own costume!
The emotes I’m trying to pick up for my burglar as biting, throwing and panning for gold seem to be more her style than any of my other girls.
My dwarf picked up the jeweler’s helm as a drop. Not one of my favorite items. It’s basically just a helm with a pointy eye part and not very dyeable.
Really enjoying the event.

Grats on the mount, droprates on them seem to be decent enough for this not to become a grind.
I found best bet on cave claws was to use one or two at the start of a round starting off in the middle of a bunch of spawns. Later in the round and I seemed to get the scraps from other peoples searching. Also dont use it right after digging up a spot as the claw will dive straight in and be wasted on the used and despawning node.

This was essentially my strategy as well, after I also got burned a few times starting out with the rounds ending before my cave claw could make it to the dig site. I quickly learned to only let loose my cave claw the instant it became activated in my inventory at the start of a round, and do it in the middle of a dense cluster of dig site like you said, Andy, hopefully without much of a crowd around me. I only loosed one cave claw per round, doing so in this manner. Loosing one any later in the round risked someone finding a huge chest before I could dig. I got whatever I got on that one dig per round, and then stood arounding waiting for the next round to start if I had more picks and cave claws in inventory. Using this strategy I got three emotes, four cosmetic items, the treasure goat and the treasure horse (twice!), all as drops in the elapsed span of about three hours. Plus I earned enough tokens to barter for the jeweller’s headgear.
I heard many people complaining about berry spawns, but I discovered they spawned most frequently on the far west side of the treasure valley. Since the spawn rate was rather sparse, you just had to be ruthless to get them. I used my newly won 68 horse to race them down ahead of others, and was also beat out by a hair many times myself. It usually never took longer than 10 minutes to get five berries this way, and during that time the CD for the other quest to get more picks had usually expired, so I was never without picks and cave claws for long.
I thought it was a fun little diversion. I gave all the money-related emotes to my miserly dwarf tinker alt. The /rich emote is especially fun to do while standing atop the gold coin piles in the vault chamber of the 21st Hall. Plus I also got a goat for one of my pre-Moria alts, which is one less I’ll have to grind for later on. One nice thing to see next time in the store is a pick you that is not consummable but instead has a three minute CD or so in between uses. I would have bought that, but not the consummable picks.

may i add, i got all the goodies above by using dowsers, much cheaper and imo much more accurate than cave claws. just a thought, hope fortune comes your way!
February 14, 2012 at 10:22 am
Man, you have some good luck. I never seem to get anything interesting from events.
February 14, 2012 at 11:13 am
Congrats on winning that horse. It looks nice.
I tried this event for a few minutes until I ran out of picks. I don’t quite get it. I won an ugly purple backpack and an ugly mask, though.
February 14, 2012 at 11:17 am
I want to confirm what the above posters said – the dowsers are the cheapest way to go. I just continued to barter the tokens for more dowsers. I won the Treasure-laden mount (yahoo!).
I never do these events, and I am really having some fun with this one. Thank you, Goldenstar, for your post or I would have missed out on this.

Nice horse.
I’ll have to run behind you and pick up the coins you trail behind you.
February 14, 2012 at 7:34 pm
I wish I’d tried this yesterday, the Brandywine location is a mob scene right now, probably for the rest of the event.
About three hours now (with a break), and I’ve got several emotes and a couple cool backpacks, but not one single Huge chest let alone one of the mounts I’m hoping for.
I did learn that using a cave-claw cage too soon after already using one results in no cave-claw, what a waste.
The dowsing gem might be more cost effective anyway, as someone pointed out here…

Last night I logged in with my Burg and after going through all the introductory stuff I went to the small hill and let loose my cave-claw. He found the Huge Treasure and got the Pony on the first go. My Kin-Mate told me I sucked since he hadn’t gotten one.
I also noted that Burgs can’t use their treasure hunting skill during the event. I’d think that would be a natural thing.
Maybe point out where there was bigger and better spots to mine.
