Buried Treasure Event Ends Today

Events

The Buried Treasure event that opened up yesterday after the patch is scheduled to close this evening.

Treasure Hunt

I can’t really expressed how disappointed I feel about the shortness of this event. I’ll just say I’m very very disappointed. I debated just going to bed last night after Dum Time. I’m glad I decided to stay up and try to participate so I at least had a chance to see the event.

It will be back. I know there will be other chance in the future but I still feel this was too abrupt. Some players in my kinship didn’t even know it was active until I mentioned it in kin chat last night.

Add to that that we hear about it’s closing through Twitter and a response in a forum thread? Why isn’t Turbine excitedly shouting to their player-base that this extra silly fun stuff is available? Number one question I saw while playing last night was “how long is this going on?”. No one could answer because no one knew.

Anyway, hopefully you’ll see this post and know that you still have some time to go try out the event and perhaps win a fancy steed of your own.

Update: In a post by Sapience it appears this was unannounced as it was intended as a “low profile stress test”. Communication should improve when the event returns.Still the event is only planned to be a 48-hour event but will be over a weekend.

…welp. I knew I should’ve pulled that all-nighter. Guess I know what my day looks like XD

My guess is it’s turned out to be more problematic than they anticipated. Thinking of some of the complaints on the forums here-makes it sound like more of an open beta than an event.

I hope they retool and put it out again soon-one of my kinnies won the goat. I’m very jealous. ;)

It’s possible. The last time we saw it, it was only live for a few hours and they called it a sneak peak or something to that effect. It’s possible they saw more issues with larger numbers and more hours.

Still I expected this not to be a beta situation as it was announced in a Dev Diary. Yes the Instance Finder is sort of a beta tool but they said so in their diary.

Yeah, guess what I’m saying is that it wasn’t intended as a beta, but turned out more or less like one, so has been cut short to rework.

Like I tell my employer when they want something on an impossible deadline-it’s not a question of _if_ you test-the question is whether you’re testing using test scenarios, or your production environment. :p

You WILL test it… one way or the other.

It’s probably so short so they can get a few people on the mounts and with the emotes and cosmetics to entice people to get them when they are made available in the store.

Ha! Am I being cynical enough?

I dont think you are, in fact.. i think this run thru was more a test to see how the marketing will go, if people will buy the picks, how many, or if the price of the cosmetics was right. Also perhaps to test the drop rate of horses. Which for me sucked, I had over 2000tokens, numerous pits, hats, packs galore and only got 3 horses. cant tell you how many huge sites i found and only got a hat or tokens for them.

i have to agree with susan, you are not nearly cynical enough.
50 tp for a pick, one-use… i can’t get over that. it’s worse than paying for gold. my guess is they’ll make the berries even scarcer for next event.
at top hours you had a better chance of getting the goat than getting the berries.

What?! Boo.. I didn’t have time to play last night, and I probably won’t have time to play tonight either. Oh well – I guess there’s always next time.

Do they know the time this is ending? I’m assuming midnight EST?

    Reply

    • Tanek Says:

The phrase used was “last full day” of the event. So it may end at midnight or it may end at 3am. Either way, unless we are given more specifics, assume midnight to make sure you aren’t caught with more you wanted to do.

I was lucky enough to get the Treasure-Laden Horse and Goat during my time, but that’s because seemingly everyone was either on a different layer or not in the area, so I had it all to myself.

There was nothing ‘low-profile stress’ on the populated layer I was stuck in. (understand what he meant tho) The berry bushes don’t spawn enough for folks to not get very frustrated with the berry quest. When one pops people pounce on it as though we’re starving and it’s the last piece of food on the face of the earth. Then you add in how the trained cave claws can ninja a dig spot away from someone else (I had three of them steal spots from other players) and it can be a mess. That said, it looked like most people had fun and the three that my cave claw stole from, only one slapped me. Would be nice to see them lessen the amount of people per layer and increase the berry bush spawn. There were so many in my layer the rounds were lasting a few seconds.

I’m curious… is it like most of these events where there’s a 3 to 10 minute wait between rounds?

      Reply

      • Blackwolfe Says:

No, a new round starts with only 10ish seconds delay

        Reply

      • Ranni Says:

The rounds are starting all the time. The quest that gives you two picks (there are two of them) are on 15 minute timers though. One you just talk to a second NPC and get the two picks. The other you have to get 5 berries for the cave claw to eat before he’ll give you the two picks.

Outside of that, there are picks in the store for 50 Turbine points (a piece?) you can buy. I did a lot of cleaning in my real house yesterday waiting out the 15 minute cool downs on the pick quests. Worked for me but felt rather slow given I could only dig 2-4 times before having to wait for the quest(s) again.

was fun while it lasted. Saw a few people get the /rich emote already (300 tokens.) I happen to win the cave claw horse and the /inspectgem emote.
Only had one issue. Cave claw point me to a dig site. Went to dig and it gave me a general error then disappeared

Sigh. They couldn’t even do it over a weekend? I didn’t know about the event until I was going to bed, and tonight I’m busy.

Well what a load of poop. I’m in Australia so got to play this for a maximum of an hour – didn’t even see a Huge Treasure Chest in that time! Was at work all day after the update went live, got home and had Valentine’s Day dinner so logged on late, and then already had a pre-organised kin raid to go to so got to see this for an hour only, and today I’m back at work again. Poop!

the general error meant the round had finished right as you dug, before the splash screen could tell the event. Dont even bother going back today, its a mad house and it seems they are concentrating the horde in only one layer. You will become very frustrated trying for the same berries. But it can be done if you are patient and determined. I tried to run 5alts and they kept spawning with the same group of people.

if anyone is wondering what to get for their coins I rec the shrew cage and pet. its adorable yard ornament.

Well, I’m looking forward to this being a real weekend event with a proper announcement time. I just hope they keep in mind that they run a global game now and that two days may be overly short. 3 or 4 days seems better, but maybe they’ll be doing this often enough in the future that it won’t matter too much.

Wow, that is disappointing, I heard about it from some kinnies last night but had no idea it would be so short, otherwise I would have checked in out.

Wouldn’t it have been nice if there was some sort of ingame notice as well? Like when you get a letter in the mail during festival time?

Thank you CSTM for keeping us informed. I saw this little event was going on, and I couldn’t resist to give it a try (while at work *shhh!). It is fun fun! I’ll be login in at work…this evening so I can use up some picks and hopefully get something great.

Gah disappointing. Applaud the idea, let down by the execution. And then there’s my horrible luck. 3 huge chests, all containing tokens. Lol. The event is just too short for the casual gamer to get something out of. Unless we see it extended, I don’t think I’ll step foot in there again.

    • Leper Says:

The all token chests should contain something, say some sort of grand treasure, two or three of which could be exchanged for a mount of the player’s choice. Possibly the other huge chest loot could be obtained the same way.

I must confess that I bought a pick from the store under desperate circumstances and it turned out for the better. I’d been grinding all day, I’d gotten all the emotes, the goat, cosmetics and was just going from spot to spot dowsing when I found a huge dig-site and realized I didn’t have any picks. I bought a pick from the store and started digging, got a huge chest, opened it up and ta-da! Treasure-laden steed!

This is a pretty neat event, but I wonder if its larger purpose is not really to stress test the “event” per se, but to stress test their whole layering process. I imagine that’s going to become more and more important with future expansions and areas.

I’m sort of happy that it is gone. My burg got some nice emotes and my horse-collecting hunter got the cave-claw horse. After that, I was done. The wait between quests drove me nuts and just getting two picks per quest seemed to be too little. I found myself yelling like Hammy from Over the Hedge every time I saw a berry bush – “My berry bush, I saw it first! You can’t have it cause it’s mine!!!!”

A better number would be 5 per quest so you’d at least have a chance of winning something without insanity creeping in.

Now that it is over I’m back to improving my 75s.
