Join CSTM Live on Middle-Earth Network Radio

June 9, 2011

General

We announced in Episode 91 that starting on June 11th, 2011 we will be moving our live show from Justin.tv to Middle-Earth Network Radio!

We did a quick test run on Sunday night making sure that Merric knows how to get us on the air and we had some friends help us test their new chat client as well. Things went really really well! We are excited for our first official live show!

This post is to help direct folks on how you can join us live and chat with us during the live cast! I also have included various ways you can listen to our live show (or any show on M-EN) from a mobile device!

Date and Time for Live Broadcast

The Casual Stroll to Mordor live show is aired on Saturdays at 9:30pm Eastern.

We encourage you to follow us on twitter or facebook as we always send out a message before we start the show or will announce if we got tied up in real life and will be delayed.

Special events such as roundtables will be announced here on the blog with the dates and times they are aired.

Live Chat During the Show

Middle-Earth Network has set CSTM up with their own chat page for our show! All that is required to join our chat is a mymiddle-earth.com account which is free! You already have an account if you are a part of the CSTM group on My Middle Earth!

To find the CSTM chat sign into My Middle-earth and find “CSTM Chat” under the MM-e navigation tab.

CSTMchat

On this page you’ll find a chat room just for the CSTM show! The chat window will prompt you for a nickname for the chat room and you’re good to go!

Note: If the page does not display the chat window, it means you haven’t logged into My Middle-earth. Simply login to see the chat window!

Live Streaming Options

Middle-Earth Network Radio is always available to listen anytime (including during our show) with the following options. All streaming services listed here are free!

Streaming Link OS Details
Middle-earth Network Radio All M-EN streams their station directly from their web site.
Winamp Win Winamp is a free media player you can install on your desktop.
Windows Media Player Win/Mac Chances are your windows PC came with this already installed but in case it wasn’t or you want to install this on your mac here is the link to the download page.
iTunes Win/Mac iTunes is free for mac and windows users and it is pretty easy to start streaming from.
Real Player Win/Mac Real Player is a free download media player you can install to stream the station.
Tunein All Stream M-EN on the tunein radio station web site.
VLC Player All VLC Player is listed as working on most platforms including linux, unix, macs and windows machines and is a media streamer.

This is in no way an exhaustive list of ways to listen to Middle-earth Network but it should be enough to get you going!

Live Streaming with your Mobile Device

It is important to note that while streaming Middle-earth Network Radio on the go and away from a wi-fi connection that regular data usage will apply to your mobile plan.

App Name Cost Devices
Shoutcast Free iOS (iPhone but can be x2 for iPad use)
Winamp Free Android
Tunein Free* iOS, Android, Palm, Blackberry, Samsung Bada,
Windows Phone
Windows Media
Player Mobile
Free Windows Phone (included on Win phones)

*tunein has a $0.99 version of their app that is ad-free for iOS devices and allows recording of programs.

I personally have tried Shoutcast and Tunein on my iPhone and iPad (sorry these are the only devices I own) and both worked well for listening to the radio station. It was easy to search for Middle-earth Network Radio and add them to my favorites for quick access later. The station continues to play when I closed the app to allow for multitasking.

TuneinI have to say that I really enjoyed the Tunein interface on my iPad. It is set up really well to allow you to see your presets for your favorite stations but allow you to browse to find any other stations you like including local stations. Your current station is in the lower left or can be expanded to take up the full screen.

I did purchase the $0.99 copy of the tunein app so I’m not sure if it is this pretty in the free version but I’m guessing it is.

I’m sure there are other mobile streaming services I’m not even aware of but this at least will get you started!

I’m excited about every aspect of this, and hope to be there Saturday.

Also tried both Shoutcast and TuneIn. Both work well, but so far I prefer TuneIn. One tip: when searching for Middle-earth Network Radio, I had to include the hyphen. In other words, a search for “Middle Earth” had no results.

Hey Guys! Cornaith here. I bring good news. Starting on the 18th, I will be able to join in the chats every week. My schedule at work changed and since it is very slow at my job (IT helpdesk tech) on Saturday nights, I will be able to listen in on my Droid through TuneIn. I already added M-E Radio to my presets. Can’t wait.
