Forward
I fear that the powers of this world have promulgated a great deceit, the greatest cover-up in the history of Middle-Earth. At the center of the vast network of hoaxes are the members of the White Council: Elrond, Mithrandir, and Celeborn. And in league with them are the Rangers, that supposed remnant from the past. For some reason they have sought to feed us lies and myths. Perhaps it was to keep us in the dark as to the true nature of Arda, so that we will be ignorant and easier to manipulate.
I have undertaken to pen this work after long study, experimentation, and research. I have studied such diverse topics as the shape of our world, the nature of the sky, moon, and stars, and our own sun. I can now report to you, gentle reader, on the truth of our natural world.
A Treatise on the Natural World
The Sun
We have all noticed the oddities of our sun and its effect on our fair Middle-Earth. Arien’s Charge quickly traverses our sky, seeming exceedingly bright. Yet no shadow cast upon the ground, no matter how long watched, will move at all to match the visible sun. The shadows cast on the ground by men, trees, buildings; yea, everything which resides here on the surface of Arda; appear from some other source. Some invisible light is in the sky which we cannot see, but like a candle, it casts its light upon the ground. The visible sun must not be our true sun then, but only an image cast upon our sky, while the true light source of our world resides, hidden and unmoving, somewhere above the clouds.
There are two possibilities for the form of this light source. It could be a source of light very far away (for reasons we see later) or the light must fall down to Arda all in parallel like rain. I do not know which.
Night and Day
This also means the true sun must turn off after three hours of light. It does not travel around our world lighting the other side as the Council would have us believe. However, no night is ever so dark as it should be without any light. This means there must be some other, lesser, light in almost the same position as our true sun, for it casts shadows in much the same orientation. This lesser light is also a different shade than the day light being of a more blue tone than the yellow shade of the true sun.
The Moon
Note that this means the moon we see is also an image floating across the sky. And truth be told, we should have known the stories of the Elves could not be true.
They have told us the Sun and moon are both spheres, and that the moon merely reflects the light of this sun back to us. However, perform this experiment. Wait till night time and light a candle in your room, imagining it to be the sun. Now take an orange and orbit it around your head. Look at the orange, study how the lit side appears and changes. It will sometimes be a crescent, and when between the sun and your head will be totally dark.
It is apparent to anyone of sense that the moon does not have any of these qualities. It is always round and fully lit. It therefore can neither be reflecting the light of the real sun nor of the fake sun. In fact it appears rather like a flat disk, or a picture.
The Stars
Elrond would have us believe that the stars are other suns far away from Arda. However, every child can plainly see that the stars are actually closer than the moon, for they occlude the moon as they, and it, perform their orbit about our world. In fact all the stars appear to move in concert as if they were all on the inside of some giant shell which slowly spins on its axis with our world at its center.
As I watch the stars pass through the moon for nights on end, it occurs to me that the other possibility is that the moon is transparent, rather like stained glass. I know not which is true. Either one contradicts the wisdom of the Council.
The Heavens
So it appears the Sun moon and stars which we see in the sky are actually pictures or images which are on some kind of shells. Three of these shells are spinning separately but in synchronization, around us. And the real sun and moon are actually single points of luminescence. Perhaps these are the Two Lamps, Illuin and Ormal, referred to in the most ancient manuscripts, and they were not destroyed at all.
In any case, these unseen light sources shine down on Arda, providing light by day and night. But what form does that world take? What are these shells orbiting around?
The Shape of the World
For time immemorial the Elves and the powers of Middle-Earth have promulgated the myth that Arda is in the form of a Sphere, so made by the Valar at the end of the Second Age in answer to the arrogance of the Numenoreans.
(Yes the Numenoreans, the ancestors of those wilderness outlaws and scalawags, the Rangers. One might have known they would be in league with the council, their leader being a friend of Mithrandir. Or should we call him Gandalf. They both are quite shifty, having many aliases.
I begin to suspect the entire story of Numenor, or Westernesse. Since the world is still demonstrably flat, it appears the entire legend of Atalante is but a lie. The histories of Arnor were likely also manufactured, or at the least severely doctored to include these charlatans, the Dunedain. The ruse was likely concocted to empower these Rangers to take our lands and become our kings. My wager is they are simply some Brigands hired by the Council to subvert and rule over us.)
In any case, after discovering that the true Sun was, in fact, stagnant and immovable it came to my mind to perform an experiment. I and my colleagues took staffs of the same height, being about 6 foot tall. In Bree did I remain, but each of my three compatriots travelled to far off locations. One I sent to Lanuch, another to Glain Vraig, and the third to the Shire.
We agreed to a date and time, noon on Midsummer, at which time we would all measure the length of the shadow cast by the sun through the staff. We would also measure the angle of that shadow in degrees from north.
If the world were indeed round then the shadow in the northern most location should be longer than those of the others. And because the experiments were performed at the same time of day, the shadows of those in the farthest East and extreme West should fall in different directions.
In the event, when we gathered back together in Bree, quite a different result was revealed. Every shadow was identical in both length and direction. This proves beyond all doubt that Arda is, in fact, flat.
Conclusion
So a new image of our Natural World emerges, in direct conflict to the purported wisdom handed down by the Council. I ask you, to what end do they lie to us? Do they sit and snigger at our stupidity in their grand halls and councils? We must cast down their lordship and seek other sources of knowledge.
Your Scholar,
Afterword
I have since learned that Saruman left the Council in protest. I sent word and have treated with him. He revealed the truth of my discoveries, and that the Council has long sought to keep the common folk in ignorance. He applauded our intelligence and prowess and has offered to assist us in developing this.. Science and Industry, as he called it, further.

Great post. Very clever is the white council.

An excellent scroll Newbold! I agree with all your summation. What do you think of the strange winds in Enedwaith or the Rainbows at Midnight? http://i1023.photobucket.com/albums/af358/jonesscott36/ScreenShot00006.jpg

Of course, were one to ask the Valar themselves about this, they’d probably only mutter something about “limitations of the engine,” whatever that means.

Ha, excelent! Very funny and crafty, congratulations!
Here goes another one for you to contemplate: the wind. The shadows from the trees’ leaves move to the wind, but the leaves don’t. Also, in Enedwaith, the wind blows the grass, but doesn’t do that to the trees and schrubbery. Live with that.

[joking mode on]
I also noticed that when you attack an enemy, his close by friends just look. Hmmm, why would that be? Maybe we are living in a virtual world where the so called “developers gods” gave more importance to your gameplay than to the realistic approach? I also hear voices from people that is far away with a strange “ping” sound. And I think there is a dark force behind the mail system, who are the mail men? How do they do their job sooo quickly?
[joking mode off]
Well, now for real. If the nights were dark as real, then we should have monster in a certain radius of a fight engage instantly. And if they are overpowered would call for help. And, they won’t procreate so fast to refill their loss so quickly. I think, the other hidden sun has nothing to do with Gandalf or Saruman.
I’d also like to see MMO evolve toward a perfect realistic environment, but we should accept the balance between their ability to develop, our hardware and the gameplay accessibility. Because I’m sure they can do a more realistic weather system and fight system, but not so sure our PC would be up to it (i’m not even close to max graphic config). And in a more realistic environment you wouldn’t be able to go and quest by yourself almost any quest.

Really there are four shells in the sky…the clouds covering and area…its the same cloud cover continuously circle never ending like standing in an eye of a hurricane day and night.

Wow, makes me really question all that I have been told! What is the purpose of this conspiracy?
Power to the people!

And what of the ominous flocks of black birds that emerge from a tree, yet no birds ever fly in to roost? What fowl [sic] magic is this?

Excellent post Haakon! It is very reminiscent of Aristotle’s works, in both style and in content (the spheres etc.). I’m very impressed with this whole thing, especially the part about measuring the shadows of staffs!

A dire conspiracy indeed! Very brave of you to pursue and chase out the perceived wisdoms of the White Council. What was it that first led you to your experiments?

LOL, I was going to just write about the strange things the engine does… But then as i thought more about it, i decided it would be fun to treat it as someone who sees all these weird game engine idiosyncrasies as i they were happening in their real world…
I suppose i was role-playing…

I have also noticed, upon my travels through the woodlands of Eriador, that not all trees cast shadows! What new devilry is this?
February 11, 2011 at 12:36 pm
I have also perceived that microclimates never change. Verily in Elven-lands I bethought twere aelfscene magik, but Bree? The Shire? The Lone Lands and the North Downs? If Middle-earth be a sphere and doth wobble, howbeit?
February 11, 2011 at 1:19 pm
And how is THIS connected with the mystery of why foes in the westernmost lands begin to ignore those of us whose prowess allows us to flourish in lands further to the east…
February 11, 2011 at 7:19 pm
and how is it that I have exited the Crafting Hall in the 21st Hall on at least 3 occasions to find that it was raining inside the Mines, for a few seconds at least ?
February 12, 2011 at 8:55 am
Hmmm… Seems there are even stranger occurrences than I was aware of…

Wonderful analysis, sir. Reminiscent of the wise council provided by Sauron while he was a “guest” of the Numenoreans.
