As I have been progressing through Monster Play (albeit slowly) one of the things that becomes blatantly obvious about playing a Creep is that when you start off you have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to transportation; namely that you are limited to travel by foot while Freeps have the ability to use their mounts. To counteract this deficiency, Creeps gain the ability to gather maps by completing deeds.
First off, let’s take a look at a map of the Ettenmoors:
![]()
Map by Levex of Elendilmir and hosted on the Monster Manual wiki.
As a new Creep you will start off at the very Northwest edge in the encampment of Gramsfoot (Creep Home Base). And since you are a new Creep (commonly known as a Greenie) you are granted only a few supplies and the bare minimum in the way of travel. A Crude Map to Gramsfoot is issued to all new Monster Players in the Ettenmoors upon their creation. However, by completing the six starter quests given by Uglash a player can open a new quest that will grant a Map to Gramsfoot (as well as a title and some Destiny Points). Both of these maps will teleport the player back to Gramsfoot, however the Crude map has a cooldown timer of one hour, while the regular map has a cooldown of one minute. This makes a huge difference in your playstyle, so completing these six quests (which are to just visit each keep) should be done A.S.A.P.
Other maps can be gained by completing quests at different locations. These locations are:
- Tirith Rhaw (TR)
- Tol Ascarnen (TA)
- Lugazug (Lug/Lugz)
- Isendeep (ID)
- Grimwood Lumberyard (LC)
While playing a Creep, when your side has control of one of these areas, quests will be available from NPC’s inside each structure. By completing these quest you will work towards completing deeds that will grant a map for that associated spot. Example: Completing quests that are contained within Lugazug will work towards a map that will teleport you close to Lugazug itself.
There are three tiers of quest completion deeds for each separate location; and each tier grants its own map with a lower cooldown and a teleportation spot closer to its associated keep than the previous version.
| Quests Required | Map Type | Cooldown |
| 10 | Crude | 30 |
| 25 | Poor | 10 |
| 50 | Good | 5 |
So, as you can imagine getting your maps is fairly important as it allows for rapid transit throughout the ‘moors. And honestly, having these maps will earn you some respect amongst other Creeps. Without them you will find yourself doing quite a bit of legwork and missing out on a bit of fun.

Maps are absolutely critical. If you can’t get to a fight, you get no infamy. When you inevitably die, maps get you back across the map to resume the right and saves your team an in combat rez.
An alternate map is here http://www.theblackappendage.com/Ettenmoors which helps locate things for Elendilmir. Some other servers have populated their locations too.

Thanks much Vyxe for the input and for the great effort you put into the Monster Manual.

Grimwood is typically abbreviated to LC, not Grim.
When talking about the maps players say Good Grim, Poor Grim, Crude Grim, and when speaking of the keep they call it LC for Lumber Camp.

Thanks Ivan.
Change made!

I think ID is a more common used abbreviation than Isen.

Gotcha! Change made

Abbreves are very server-specific. I know on Landy freepside, Isen is what’s used and I’ve actually never seen ID.
So it all comes down to where you are. I recommend checking out the server-specific PVMP forums, which usually have good lists of server-specific abbreviations.

Some clarifications:
The two maps to Gramsfoot share cd so you should discard the crude one as soon as you get the better one.
(If you use the crude one, you won’t be able to use the better one for about an hour.)
All quests in TA do not help you progress in TA map deeds by completing them and all quests that do help are not all located in TA. Also there are Lug Map deed quests in Dar Gazag (DG).
You have to check your quest log to see what category quests are connected to.
All crude maps (grams map excluded) share same cd.
Same about the poor ones, while the good ones have individual cd.

Thanks AsH.
Looks like I need to do some revisions.

Some Map Gathering Strategies..
Here’s one.. http://www.theblackappendage.com/book/map-gathering-strategy
Some clarifications..
Lug quests
The Mayor and Hobbit legs quests do you pick up (and hand in) at Dar Gazag (DG).
TA quests
The An quest is picked up at Orc Camp (if creeps control TA).
The Rockwither quest is not counted as an TA quest.
LC quests
There’s no 10 log quest , but 20 logs or 10 logs and 10 ores
Some alternatives..
Lug quests
Collect more (Slabs of) Troll-stones and/or regulary pick up the Guards of Tirith Rhaw quest.
Collect Ore (in Isendeep) and/or Oil (drops mostly from archers?) to turn in when Lug have been newly recaptured.
TA quests
Collect Ore (in Isendeep), Kindlings* (mostly from Fallen Timbers in Hithlad, also a drop from Leafcull Shade-lurker/Bramblethorn), Shattered Blades (drops mostly from melee soldiers?) and/or Oil (drops mostly from archers?) to turn in when TA have been newly recaptured.
TR quests
Collect Feathers* (drops from Eagles).
Collect Ore (in Isendeep) and/or Oil (drops mostly from archers?) to turn in when TR have been newly recaptured.
LC quests
Collect more Kindlings (mostly from Fallen Timbers in Hithlad, also a drop from Leafcull Shade-lurker/Bramblethorn), Roots (mostly from Fallen Saplings in Hithlad, also a drop from Leafcull Shade-lurker/Bramblethorn) and/or Logs (mostly from Fallen Saplings in Hithlad)
ID quests
Do the Get the Troops to the Isendeep regulary
Also you can do the Defeat Captain-General raid quests, but there’s no need for you to pick up those quests as there will surely be someone who can share those quests when needed.
(Other quests I never pick up is the Slug Mash in Grams/DG and the Footmen’s Badges/Sergant-At-Arms’ Patches/et c in DG – the latter got no CD, so visit DG amd hand in those badges/patches/et c whenever you need a burst of DP.)
*As I find ID and LC map deeds being the hardest to complete, I usually saves the Kindlings and Feathers to quests connected to those locations.

Remember that capturing a keep with the quest counts towards your maps.
Also for Grimwood everyone that helps take the keep can pick up the Caragdal spider reinforcements quest and turn that in at their leisure. And if you save the grimwood heartwood you randomly get from the logs you should be able to turn that quest in once on your way to getting the good map.
For TR, the troll stone quest there only takes 5 slabs so it’s easy to do. There’s a quest for 5 food sacks and 5 shards of troll stone, and the bedding of bears quest is also fairly easy to accomplish. You can also kill Goldhead (with a group) for a cool 750 DP and another quest.
For Isendeep, Golloval is worth 750 DP and can be soloed at night.
Also, if you capture the elf camp flag and bring it to TR or Lugz it places NPCs in the flag room, gives you some Destiny, and might count as a quest for whichever keep you took it to. Same for the Hoarhallow flag that goes to TA.

The TR quest Bedding of bears is easily done from TR GY (grave yard) – tag bears and pull them to the Uruk archers.
To solo Golloval, I think you better be a healing class or have the skill to disappear (warg) or Trapdoor Sanctuary (spider).
The trick is to pull Gollo down to the troll camp and make him aggro any of those three trolls. That’s only doable during nights – from dawn to dusk there will be polar bears at the camp.
You can engage a forth troll by pulling the closest spawned eagle there.
Important is to keep Gollo on the north side of the trolls, or there’s a risk he’ll been knocked away to far from his spawn location and therefore reset.

The alternatives are refering to the linked strategy and it’s listed quests.

Excellent guide, Merric. As stated by others, maps are absolutely critical for being a monster player. No maps = no good kills. Not to mention that all the time you spend grinding the maps, you get to know the moors and where everything is.

Another useful resource over the years has been the daily stats site for PvMP to track your progress
