Today LOTRO posted a reminder to their launcher that buying in-game gold is against the EULA and can result in some dire consequences for your account.
This is a friendly reminder to our players that buying gold for real money is not only against the EULA, but can put your account at risk for hacking or banning. Buying gold causes game imbalance, damages the economy, and contributes to the amount of spam in chat, tells, and mail. In extreme cases it’s even been known to cause increased hair loss, global warming, and the extinction of at least 2 species of insects every day. Don’t buy gold!
I’m not sure if this means there’s been an up-tick in gold sales caught but I had wondered if the gold-sellers found LOTRO a more tasty treat since going free-to-play last September.
It is true that free and premium accounts have gold limits but those limits are easily removed (and is actually part of this week’s sales). Perhaps it is just this sale that sparked the warning.
I certainly have not noticed any gold spammers in game but at the same time I don’t want them cluttering up my chat either! Don’t buy gold and we won’t encourage the sellers to infect our game!

Two kinmates were hacked in the last couple weeks. Kin vaults were wiped out over the holidays. Wonder if gold farmers are getting bolder with f2p.

Just happened to me, too, five or six days ago. Okay, lesson learned, a more secure password than the name of a country is a good idea
But yep, 150+ gold lost until – and if – the GMs decide to get that back to me, once I have access to my account again.
So yeah, this is also a good time to step up your account security if your password is weak.

Restoring gold shouldn’t be an issue since that’s something that they are usually known to restore. It’s gear that might be an issue.
Man I’m sorry to hear about that.

Not worried about gear, My.LotRO says the gear that I’m wearing at least is all still there. Dunno about my inventory, but I didn’t carry much in that regard except pots, really.
The biggest inconvenience is just not being able to play right now D:

That’s good if they restore your account. A friend of mine got hacked last year, and complained to Codemasters twice but they did nothing. He then phoned them, at which point he was told that they’d ‘discovered that he had been account-sharing’ which was against policy and therefore he’d been given a permanent ban.
Apparently having your account stolen, to Codemasters, is the same as you giving it to someone else. Go figure.

I haven’t noticed an upswing in Gold Sellers, but I have noticed more threads on the official forums about account hacking. I’m not sure if this is related.
However, does this reminder mean that if we don’t like bugs, we should by Gold? j/k

Poor insects! I wish gold spamming would be extinct instead

I had my account hacked a few months back as well. At least they had the courtesy to just clean out my bags and money and not sell off all my gear, etc. I’ve since upped the strength of my password. I think they were targeting high level users as the toons they cleaned out were on another server and all were lvl 60+.
In regards this post, I haven’t seen a gold spammer since I moved to Landroval and for a long time before on my previous server. I used to have fun reporting them though.

Don’t give your account password to ANYONE. EVER.
And change it at least once a month.

I’m an officer in my kin and a guy asked to join, so after i inviteted him (btw he was new and lvl 6) he made a HUGE deal about getting 2 gold, instead of asking for tips or if someone had it,which me and several officers would have been willing to give him if he’d asked, he started asking if anyone had paypl accounts, after no one would give it to him, he went offline and I kicked him, it was all very strange, but i didnt want him getting a kinnie in trouble for gold selling.

Gold selling is doubleplus ungood. Not just from a game economy standpoint, but gold sellers have been loosely tied to foreign gangs [and to people that steal candy from babies and terrorize cute puppies.]
