The Champion Roundtable was recorded on November 12, 2010. This episode is with special guest Champions: Elborigorn, Blademartial, Moramoth & Adam.

Similar to our past roundtable discussions, this is a lengthy episode but it is full of Champion information. We discuss soloing, grouping, skirmishes, skills, traiting, legendary items and much more!

There’s plenty of information here on what a Champ in Lord of the Rings does. There’s great tips for new and experienced players alike!

Unfortunately the only format this is available in is audio. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause some of you who would prefer to read.

I was a bit disappointed with the show. Too much gonzo champ, not enough professional champ. Never really got into the tactics of grouping and working with the healer and tank to make everyone’s job easy. Perpatuated the Leeroy Jenkins stereotype more than cured it, I’m afraid.

I think all 4 guys love for playing a champ came through. I have always seen these roundtables as getting people excited about playing said class and letting the guests pass on some of their experiences to others who are interested.

There was lots of good info in there with a few splashes of “SHING-SHING” – a perfect combination for any champ really. We poked fun at the seterotypes of the LM during that roundtable as well. If you are not having fun while doing a podcast – who would truly listen to the whole thing?

Well done all, if I didn’t already have a 65 champ, I’d probably try one now. On second thought, maybe I should roll a dwarf one just in case the bazooka does go live ;)

I also disagree. My first toon to max (50) was a champ, and have continued to level and play her. The big grouping and fellowship skills that a champ has were discussed (rising and ebbing Ire, champions challenge, heroics and sound the attack). But the Champ is primarily a aoe/dps fool. Their biggest role in a group is dps, off tanking, and when possible threat management.

They could have discussed with a little more emphasis items one should not do in a group. Like aoe close to mezzed mobs. Or when running with a warden start off with the Shing-Shing, as Wardens need moment or two to collect the agro. But those sort of items are really not champ specific. I have an LM and am particulary sensitive to stuns being broken so have set under options the notification of stun/daze/root breaks for all my alts. Funny thing is that I find my LM (red traited) breaks more Burg mezzes than anyone else, with half my skill and the sticky gourd AOE damage…. :)

Playing up to the class stereotypes is kind of fun IMO. It’s as close as most players ever come to roleplaying nowadays. :-)

People actually enjoy being totally Leroy when playing their champ. I do anyway. Always fun to see what the mini will say!

The same people will play totally different styles on their other toons. My LM is (having listened to the LM round table) is a laid-back weed-smoking pet-feeding tree-hugging kind of elf. A quiet shy kind of toon. (Though my bear pet has Leroy moments of his own).

Anyway, /swordsalute to Elb, Blademartial, Moramoth, and Adam. Listened to the podcast twice; laughed out loud both times.

      Fave moment on this episode:

Elb: “…and continuous blood rage … reduces your incoming healing by 90%”
      Goldenstar: “OH! MY! GOD!” (chokes)
      Elb:”No no listen ….”

      LOL

Its an approximation of the noise the skill ‘raging blades’ makes, it is a legendary AOE skill which also adds threat, I think it was first mentioned on the lotro forums here:

like much of our discussion, it is tongue in cheek, and playing to the stereotype for fun.

Not my fave roundtable and Elb gives me a bad taste of what champs are. The shing shing thing is the most annoying thing i have ever heard

What I was really trying to get across about champs is that your job is DPS, you are responsible for certain aspects of survival but as a DPS class you should be aggressive and should challenge other classes to play aggressively as well. I’m sorry that the mannerisms, phrases, expressions and faux attitudes that I used struck the wrong chord with you. However, I do not regret my stance nor my approach to presenting it.

A good roundtable, all in all, but not very deep considering it was 2 hours long. As usual, we could have used more focus on leveling, and some info on crafting choices. We won’t even get the shing-shing until we can trait a legendary skill! But I’ve gotten used to the fact that because I’m a casual player, a lot of stuff that’s discussed in these roundtables I may never reach.

What I’m hearing is that Champ is an aoe-dps class with an interrupt, and can be used to talk some content if you retrait.

Sounds like it needs some balance work. If Ardour is so limited, what would you like to see to make it a more effective choice?

I really don’t know what specific leveling type things we could possibly talk about? That is specific to the champion I mean. I do think some information was shared when Merric mentioned what skill he should work towards first on Adams advice.

This is meant to be an overview of the class from enthusiastic players on that class. We swiftly cover a broad range of play for that class from solo to groups to skirmishes and the moors, traits, stats, etc. It has never been intended as all the information you could ever want to know about champions. 2 hours is our limit.

I’m sorry it disappointed you but if you have specific questions on leveling a champ I am sure Elb would be happy to answer them for you!
