Episode 45a: Captain Roundtable

Captain The release of our Captain Roundtable recorded July 8th, 2010 with special guest Captains Elborigorn, Geiri and Docholiday. Elb is well known and respected for his Advice post that is stickied in the Captain’s forums. Geiri you’ve heard on our show once before in the Dungeon Roundtable. Doc of course you know from his blog as well as from the Warden Roundtable.

Like our other roundtable discussions, this is another lengthy episode but so full of Captain information goodness we couldn’t bare to cut any of it. We discuss soloing, grouping, tanking, healing, differences in using heralds vs banners, weapon choices, traits, legendary items and much more!

A really inspiring episode were our panel explains what it really means to be a Captain in Lord of the Rings Online. There’s plenty of good information for both experienced as well as new Captains.

Like I just posted on my site, this episode has gotten me back into my Captain. I’m really looking forward to getting back raiding on him as a nice diversion from my Warden.

One comment on noble mark: You guys made it sound like it is not really worth it for pulling…

Noble mark pulls are great, because the initial threat is almost (but not quite zero), but then the threat quickly ramps up. I refer to it as a “stealth pull”. The reason is because the radius that other mobs will come after you is directly proportional to the pull. So a noble mark allows you to pull a mob in a closer formation with other mobs without pulling the adds. Then as the mob is running towards you you can use threatening shout, battle cry, then grave wound when he gets to you. That mob will be stuck hard on you at that point, even if you do not trait LTC.

    I wish to make COMPLAINT.

After the minstrel roundtable I took my minstrel away from AH duties and started levelling it up seriously.

After the warden round table I rolled a ward and am now slinging javelins in the Lone Lands.

Now, there’s been a Captain roundtable, dammit!!

This is NOT good as I DONT have the time! Please stop this!

Anyway – these roundtables are great stuff. Some of the best MMO podcasts I have heard, ever (and I’ve listened to a lot, many games).

On cappys – I always thought that cappys were a bit, well, dull. But there were some epic opinions in the cast: ‘A cappy takes a good group and makes it great’ is a wonderful statement of what the class can and should be. My eyes were opened! And it released my lvl 6 cappy from his long vigil by the bank…

I apologize for my part in your newfound altaholism. However, I would just argue that you can set the other classes down and just play the captain…

It’s not the funnest class for solo levelling but in groups and at end-game… oh man, such fun :)

another great roundtable! It makes me want to roll a captain now.

The comment about running in the moors as a captain: “The plan is to hit you in the face”…hilarious!

I must say the Captain’s round table show rocked. I enjoyed the Warden’s Roundtable as well – but it was already basically my favorite class. After listening to the Cap show – I may have to rethink that!

Thank you so much for this, if there’s any room for expansion here, would love to see it, perhaps less about mechanics of captains and more of the gameplay. This roundtable really, really, really helped with my own captain, which is now a L56 (and was about..L20ish? when I first heard this a month ago or so), so thanks for that!

[...] I am currently working on bringing my Captain up to level 75, and then I will begin working on a different character (probably my Burglar or my Minstrel). I started seriously playing my Captain about a month ago, after listening to A Casual Stroll to Mordor’s Captain roundtable podcast. Talk about epic! I learned a great deal of information (granted, some of it was a bit outdated), and it was truly inspiring. If you are a Captain, or are considering a Captain, or are not deaf (because if you listen to it, you will roll a Captain), I suggest you listen to it here. [...]
