Warden Roundtable, Live Tonight!

June 15, 2010

General

Tonight we will be hosting a Warden Roundtable where we will be talking with several Wardens (Docholidayj, Azzbuk, Savatage, and Ryodor) about the class, what their thoughts are, what tips they may have, and anything else we can think of as well.

However, since we know that we can’t possibly think of every question (and because we have limited to no history with playing Wardens) we’d like to invite you all along to put in your 2 cents!  We will be broadcasting live tonight at 9:30 EDT (-5 GMT) on The Lotro Network!  So feel free to drop in and participate; we’d love to hear what you have to say!

**Note**
I’d like to apologize for the late announcement, but we are still considering how and if we want to do live streaming.  We certainly have had a positive experience so far, and are leaning towards live streaming on a consistent basis.  If we do, we will schedule a normal schedule and do our best to stick to it!

    What? I don’t!

Please tell me you’ll be posting a recording of this later. I’ve got a Dol Dinen run at about that time. :(

I’m working til midnight Central so I’ll use this to submit mine.

I’m sure this will be dealt with anyway because the Warden still appears to be a controversial class — I can practically guarantee there will be a “Wardens suck” or “Wardens can’t tank” debate in GLFF every single day on Arkenstone.

I’m working a Warden myself because I prefer complex classes (my main is a Lore-master) and tanking is my end-game goal so I am very interested to hear experiences with playing the Warden well as a tank, impressions for the class’ alternative style to tanking, what are typical opening moves and rotations to maintain aggro, and so forth. Also what are the experiences of playing other classes with Wardens in the group, both good and bad?

I’m also interested in the usual questions of which traits and virtues did the various Warden players choose, and why, and their overall build/spec. Also, my Warden is 44 now and still don’t feel he’s quite able to step into a tanking role yet. Not sure if it’s gear (using the Fem set) or if the class doesn’t come into its own in terms of playing in groups (it IS a highly soloable class after all) until later in the game?

One point of contention with the class is its focus on Evasion Tanking rather than the traditional “wear the heaviest armor and shield you can get and stand there letting the boss beat on you” style of tanking. I’ve been there, done that, and it’s why I’m drawn to alternative styles such as the Dread Knight in Vanguard which specialized in two-handed tanking and performed much worse if you switched to traditional sword-and-board.

Then other contention is that the Warden requires a lot of actual player skill in terms of knowing the gambits and when to use which of them. No “snap aggro” like the Guardian has and the main difference seems to be that with a Guardian in the group, even a poor to mediocre player can usually handle things but a mediocre player on a Warden is disastrous if they’re put in a tanking role. It almost hearkens back to the “good old days” of MMO’s where if someone actually happens to be a great Warden, they become well-known for it on their server. Can’t necessarily say the same for other classes.

That being the case, are there suggestions for other roles such as a dps role spec for players who aren’t quite up for the task of tanking?

Looking forward to this. I play a Warden and feel I know quite a bit about it (even if not necessarily an expert). I have the following questions:

    (1) What are good legacies for Warden’s LI’s?

    (2) What are the best class traits to run with?

    (3) What are the best virtues to tank with as a Warden?

    (4) What is the best way to convince a group that you really can tank as their are many out there that still think Warden’s can’t tank?

Thank you and look forward to listening to this.

Again, thanks for letting me participate. I love hearing how differently the same class is played, I’ll definitely have to, like Azz, try out some of the tips and tricks that were discussed.

Also, since mylotro doesn’t show, I run all tier 9 relics in my LIs, which help a lot with the ICPR and the crit D.

I had a blast as well – always fun to chat about the game and my favorite class. I’m sure I managed to tick off a few folks with my comments but part of that’s just me and also just fighting back all the harassment the class has received in general.
