Episode 43a: Warden Roundtable

WardenOur long awaited Warden Roundtable discussion with Wardens DocHoliday, Azz and Ryodor. This is another one of our signature longer episodes (just over 2 hours) but we thought all the information these three were giving was too good to edit out! talk about tips and tricks for playing a warden. We discuss tanking, dps, traits, legendary items, skill rotations and more! None of us were PvMP experts but do not fret, our guests had some experience with Wardens in the ‘Moors and we also plan to have PvMP roundtables in the future!

We had a great time talking to these folks and we appreciate them sharing their knowledge with us! Hope you learn a little something, perhaps hear something new to try with your warden or get the bug to create a warden of your own!

Yay. Now we don’t have to yell at Merric next time in the chat room.

Can’t wait to get home and give it a listen. Loving the warden this convinced me to make.

I had a blast on this episode, as you guys continue to roll these out hopefully you’ll continue to get questions and chat-room participation to help drive the conversations as opposed to us just chatting on what we think people care about.

That was a great listen, sorry I couldn’t make it to the discussion. I keep getting better with Ryo’s help in our Kin and so look forward to the day when the student becomes the master! :)

Great information on tanking. Some comments about DPS though, you guys were saying that warden dps is not imipressive: that is because you are not using the right rotation and setup. To DPS effectively:

    1. Recklessness with critted food and legacy.
    2. Trait 5 deep in spear line for Warden’s Triumph bonus.
    3. DO NOT USE A DOT ROTATION. The direct damage rotations are much more useful because most mobs are dead before the DOTS wear off. If you put a bunch of DOTs on a mob you are just wasting power.

The rotation I have found best for single target DPS is:
    1. WT: sp (fi-sh)(sp-fi)
    2. MB: sp (sh-fi) sp
    3. OS: (sp-sh) sp
    4. CS: sp (fi-sp)
    5. OS: sp (sh-sp)

Please note that it uses all six masteries, so you can repeat if every 15 seconds. Tratied right at 65, you can do around 400 DPS with this or a similar rotation.

Thanks for the info Brathwine, I’ve never really tried too many pure DPS rotations as I normally agree with Ryodor that DPS is better served by other classes. But 400 DPS isn’t anything to sneeze at, that’s for sure :) My only concern would be on the power usage for those rotations, from what I’ve seen on the forums.

For me, I usually focus on the DoTs as they’re quite power effecient but work best when you have multiple mobs as you can stack the DoTs on one, work on the other, then finish the first off once the DoTs wear off.

You are right about power usage. One rotation takes about 800 power, so I run out of power in about 55 seconds using this. It is best for shorter fights. For longer fights or if I am running short on power I will switch to a bleed rotation. Fortunately the Mirkwood cooked food helps a lot with power regen between fights.

great podcast, makes me want to dust off my little warden and level him up!

  8. Ryodor Says:

Even with that rotation, I’d still rather take a DPS class or my Champ to do damage.

While I can see the potential for some great damage, I do discount the warden’s DPS as I have a DPS character that would use instead.

    • Brathwine Says:

Yeah of course a champ does more damage.

But can your champ then turtle up and surf a 40k boss down solo :)

“Heal the guard because he’s squishier”. Tru dat.

I play both both classes, and whereas my guard can take a heavier beating, my warden can recover from disaster better.

So on average the guardian is tougher, but the warden dies from less often.

Great episode, keep them coming! :)

I got one thing to add: despite 300 references the Warden is actually based on one character from the Silmarillion – Ecthelion of the Fountain, he was an Elf and he solo’d a balrog, and not just any balrog but the Lord of Balrogs, Gothmog. Granted, Ecthelion died in the process but it was the very beginning of wardenry, the art improved much since :)
I think this should also settle any arguments about which class is best for a Warden.

I love all of your podcasts and have enjoyed the class round tables as well. My only hope is that the Burglar class is not last on your list since it seems to be the least played. Burglar power!

Hello,i haven’t played my warden for about 5 months, so now there are a few new basic gambits i don’t quite understand, it are the ones that do double gambits like “spear-spear” “spear-shield”,…. now, my problem is i can only do the spear ones, how can i use the other ones (they’re on my shortcut panel, but they’re always grey)?
