Episode 41a: Minstrel Roundtable

minstrel We have a special mid-week episode for you where we talk with Minstrels Moondog, Harperella and Mortermeer (Bryandt).

This is a roundtable discussion where we talk about tips and tricks for playing a minstrel. We discuss healing. warspeech, traits, legendary items, skill rotations and more! None of us were PvMP experts but do not fret, we plan to have PvMP roundtables in the future!

We had a great time talking to these folks and we appreciate them sharing their knowledge with us! Hope you learn something. I know I have some new ideas I plan to try with my Minstrel!

To wade in on the Dwarven minstrel side (obviously! :D ) here are three great reasons for dwarf minstrels-

Endurance of stone: +75% common, fire and shadow damage mitigation for 10 sec (this soo underated PvE)

Dwarf Endurance: 50+ vitality to the fellowship for 10 minuites

    They are a freakin’ Dwarf!!!

(I could go on all day, but you’d all die from boredom!)

Great episode guys, I like these round tables, it is really usefull hearing ideas, and similarities and differences between play style.

One thing that Dwarves get that’s really appealing early on is the ability to use axes. This falls by the wayside once you get into Legendary Items (sadness) but it is one really cool advantage that minstrels of no other race gets.

Excellent podcast guy, thanks. I don’t play a Mini, but it’s really good to hear what’s important to them.

One of the great things about Lotro is how different the world looks to the different classes.Gives the place more depth.

Looking forward to hearing about other classes!

Was a great listen, I think every time I thought of something I was going to comment on someone else piped up and mentioned it :)

    “Oh, I forgot about Elves.”

    Good on ya =D

I say this even though I have more elves than any other race >_>

In fact, I only have one dwarf. I think it’s because I always try to make another dwarf but he’s never as awesome as Drilorin.

I was quite surprised not to hear more about the Watcher of Resolve trait line. Great threat and power management help in that trait line, plus the legendary trait makes the SoS HoT a fair bit more valuable (particularly when paired with the legendary weapon legacy to boost pulses). Great discussion though, regardless of Watcher of Resolve content :)

But yes – Fate and Will are king. Will more than fate in this minstrel’s opinion (Will directly affects your outgoing healing rating), but they’re both great (Fate affects your critical heals).

Also…I *love* the idea of using the Gift of the Hammerhand as a penalty for stupidity, thanks for the great idea.

    Thanks for another great podcast!

My kin calls that skill that puts the white sphere around you and trades 2 damage for 1 power an “easter egg” since it’s egg shaped. Tends to get used for doing GS hard mode to trip the one boss within the 10 minute time limit. I’ve seen other classes try it in my very limited experience with GS, and the only one that seemed to be able to do it reliably was the minstrel with the easter egg up.

Do make a champion’s day by easter egging him, in fervour we have probably the highest icpr of any class. Of course, as a consequence we tend to have tiny power pools. So it will finally start to suck when we run out of power and are reduced to auto attacks. :)

And the champ is often the chap who has to sprint back and try and pull mobs off the healer since we can generate a lot of agro quickly with damage if need be and can take 25% of the healer’s agro immediately and have our yell that temporarily yanks the mobs attention for I think 10 seconds as well.

It’s valid criticism that if we’re in fervour and pull agro it’s our own fault. If we are doing our job right we’re not pulling agro off the tank, we let him get a good head start and then only target his target or the main assist’s target. Good champs get permission for AoE goodness and in 3 man instances it’s always good to know when the healer will need us in a different stance than fervour (say when the boss is doing lots of AoE and dots and everyone has to get healed all the time).

Thanks for the great tip about using Lay of Hammerhand for tanking. I will certainly use that next time I duo with my wife’s hunter. I also want to encourage everyone to spread the word regarding Song of Aid. It is an incredibly useful and very underutilized skill. If you run with a kin or other regular group, then give them a tutorial on how it works and when to use it. In my opinion, it should be a well used tool in any high functioning group.

I have a level 65 dwarf minstrel. Who replaced a level 35 hobbit minstrel whom I deleted.

I had good reasons at the time (pre-Moria) for replacing a hobbit with a dwarf. Axe and higher icpr. Plus I just love dwarves. But now I wish I hadn’t done it.

When you get to the higher levels the differences between the races become less important in terms of stats. Gear makes us all nearly equal.

Now that I am finally raiding on a regular basis I realize just how stinking important *play dead* is. Hobbits get an extra. Throw in a weapon with still as death cooldown and you save a lot of grief in raids.

Just listened to this roundtable (just started a Ministrel Alt) hoping to get some tips about the Skirmish soldiers you guys use, and it seems this is the ONLY roundtable that skirmish soldiers are NOT mentionned!

    I’m sad :’(

But still, a good roundtable nonetheless…

“… most of the legacies for them (Champs) are a potpourri of suck…”

    Too funny!

    As someone with a 65 Champ, I completely agree…

I love your class roundtables and was hoping to pick up some tips for the mini I’m leveling, but the actual podcast link appears to be missing. Any chance it is archived somewhere else?
