CSTM Podcast Sponsor

May 27, 2010

General

Typefrag.com This is just to let everyone know that our podcast has picked up a sponsor, Typefrag hosts of ventrilo voice chat services. We feel this is a good fit for our audience (we’ve gotten some strange sponsor requests in the past) since chatting in an MMO is fun and it is useful for fellowships.

How ventrilo servers differ from in-game voice chat is you don’t have to be in a fellowship/raid to chat with someone and you have quite a few more options on how you can apply your settings. For example I can boost a quiet person’s audio and lower Merric’s audio (he’s a loud talker). There are multiple rooms and even password protected channels you can create like for officers to discuss matters privately.

We’ve used ventrilo servers for years. I believe I was first introduced to ventrilo when I was playing Star Wars Galaxies (Merric may have used it earlier) and typefrag’s ventrilo was something we used daily when playing World of Warcraft. Typefrag’s ventrilo service is something we’re very familiar with and think is useful tool for gamers!

How will this effect the podcast?
There will be a short advertisement at the beginning of the show. Nothing unlike other podcasts you may have heard (or if you watch PBS), “This show is sponsored by..” and then we go on to regular programming. It’s only the one time at the beginning.

This upcoming episode (#39) may have a bit more chat about Typefrag simply because we’re going to be introducing them as our sponsor.

How will this effect the blog?
There’s a new ad you’ll see on the right navigation bar. That’s it.

Why a sponsorship?
As you know, this blog and podcast is a hobby for us. We do it for fun but we also want to provide quality product for you to enjoy. The money from this sponsorship we plan on squirreling away to use for upgrades to our podcasting gear, extras for the blog or perhaps for tickets to future expos that we can report from. Hopefully you will see a gradual improvement to our audio quality and services on the blog.

Discount!
As part of our sponsorship we’re happy to offer our listeners 25% off the first month of service from Typefrag! Use promo code: TOMORDOR to apply your discount!

Congratulations, Merric and Goldenstar! Typefrag is a very appropriate sponsor, and your listeners are obviously excellent potential users of their service.

When I played Warcraft my guild used Ventrilo and it was terrific to be able to easily chat with guildmates. The ability to make chat rooms so you were only conversing with your party or subgroup of a larger kin is excellent.

I was confused by “Puzzle Quest” in the weekly poll, until I read this description at gamedev.net. Option “H”, the ‘disguise quest’ is my favorite type of quest:

    4. Puzzle quest – A door is locked or an NPC will not cooperate until a puzzle is solved. For MMO use these should have a randomized start state or victory condition to thwart walkthrough-makers.
    - A. Dialogue puzzle – make the correct choices in conversation with the NPC
    - B. Press buttons in the right order or set switches to the right positions
    - C. Slide and/or rotate blocks/tiles to the right positions
    - D. Other physics/logic puzzle
    - E. Math problem
    - F. Trivia question
    - G. Maze (personally I much prefer the kind where you slide a token through a maze you are viewing from the top to the kind where you are walking through it. And mazes which violate the laws of physics with strange warps are just annoying.)
    - H. Disguise – you must wear all the pieces of a disguise to enter a restricted area or fool an NPC.

Congrats on the sponsor! Now if only my kin would use vent, the in-game voice in LOTRO ranges from good to awful.
