April 20, 2010

LOTRO News, Turbine

Just announced today in a press release that Turbine Inc. has been purchased by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

No other news other than than this acquisition has happened. I’m certain that this means very little for us on the short term and overall it may not be bad for us. Let’s not pull out our tinfoil hats just yet. Keep your eyes to our blog as Merric plans on writing an opinion post about what he feels on this news!

Tinfoil hat nothin’! I’m heading to the fallout shelter and locking myself in for 30 years!

Not because I think anything about this, just because I want to break the world record :D

I hear Turbine/WB are replacing all the boars in the game with wabbits.

I don’t know what to make of it yet. An interesting bit is that now all of the LOTR game publishing rights are held by WB. Does that give Turbine carte blanche for anything Tolkien in the future? Does it mean less adherence to the books for future content? “HMM” is what I say for now.

“What do you wanna do tonight, Frodo?”
“The same thing we do every night, Sam. TAKE THE RING TO MORDOR!”

o/` It’s Frodo and the Sam

    the other’s on the lam!

    They’re Hobbits from the Shire!
    Their situation’s dire!
    They’re in a jam–

Until anything changes, like Steefel being ousted or something, I figure is same old Turbine with more resources at their fingertips.

Agreed. I’m hoping there are no staff changes, overall.

My thought is that this will largely be positive, mostly because this means a hell of a lot more money can be invested into Turbine’s products.

When a game company is bought out, you almost never see the new owners decreeing immediate, massive changes. It’s a recipe for failure.

Change will be gradual. The effects of this will take a year or more to become apparent.

Well it was fun. Warner Brothers and video games do not mix.

At least Turbine wasn’t bought by EA or worse, SOE.

Personally I think EA has turned their game around in recent years. The one to be afraid of now is Activision.

Was Activision responsible for MW2 (in that they weren’t part of the first one)?

If not then I’d say EA or the other company that worked on MW2 are worse options.

Activision were the ones who gutted Infinity Ward.

Though I love to poke fun at EA and John Riccitello (because I worked for them for three years), John has turned the company around culture-wise. They’re friendlier to development houses and employees, and they’re taking chances on new franchises like Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge, Dante’s Inferno et al.

Last I heard sales weren’t all that great, though. There’s a risk that if Riccitello is discredited for failing to rake in the cash with his new style of management, he’ll be ousted and replaced with someone who’ll return to the bad old days of bean-counting.

Here’s hoping the sales of DA and ME2 helped avert that.
